  1. Did anyone attend the open house on March 25th? Unfortuantely, I was unable to attend, but I scheduled another visit for later this week. I'm very interested in knowing how the open house went and if there is anything of note I should look out for/ask about during my visit. Thanks!

I attended and it went really well. I was on the fence and it helped me decide to accept their offer.

  2. Hello. I now face a dilemma of school choosing. I received four offers from four schools. They are:

    Cornell CIPA MPA - 20k

    JHU IPS MPP - 19k

NYU Wagner MPA - 15k approximately

CMU Heinz MSPPM Pitts track - 8k per semester

I'd like to work in private sector in the future, probably go back to my country China. I think I have collected enough information but it turned out that the more I know, the more confused I am...So, please help me make my decision.

If it's any help I was faced with the same dilemma and decided to chose Hopkins IPS. I really enjoyed my visit and I've heard only good things thus far.

  3. This is an update. As my signature suggests, I chose the MPP from IPS at Hopkins. I couldn't refuse the money. There were a lot of other really great offers and it was really hard turning down Carnegie Mellon but alas, I think I found the program that is right for me. Good luck to all!

  5. hey there...i got my heinz decision yesterday...they notified via email and then you had to check your status on the application website

    (was accepted!)

    Yes, congrats on your acceptance!

I see that last year the acceptances were spanned out from mid Feb to mid to late March so I'll refrain from having a full-on heart attack as of yet!

  6. I know that logically looking at the applicant pool doesn't really help you estimate your chances any better, but I still find it comforting. I thought I'd start a thread where we can post an info we find on how many people have applied to government affairs programs.

    My start:

Fletcher admissions blogs says 2010 applicant numbers are about the same as 2009:

    http://news.fletcher...issions/?p=1487

Which is still about 10% bigger than the usual applicant pool:

    http://news.fletcher...missions/?p=507

According to the SIPA website they usually receive 2500 for MIA and 900 for MPA (see quote and link below). Now if you read their blog the day after the deadline for the MIA and MPA they say they received 1200 for both programs online. Unless they receive a very large portion of their applications in the mail and after the deadline it appears they received less then what they report as normal. Just an observation.

    http://www.sipa.columbia.edu/resources_services/admissions/faq.html#4

“We receive approximately 2,500 applications per year for the fall semester of the MIA program. We receive approximately 900 applications per year for the fall semester of MPA program.

While the number of applications received can vary, the number of spaces in the incoming fall class each year remains fixed at approximately 350 for the MIA program and 110 for the MPA program. The average acceptance rate for both programs is approximately 35%.”

In the 24 hours leading up to the deadline . . .

    • Over 1,200 people submitted applications through our online system

  7. What results search?

At first I was confused too. The "results search" tab that is under thegradcafe.com logo. It's adjacent to the "forums" tab, which should be highlighted if you are reading this.

I also read something in a broader discussion that some of these may be fake. we should see if people start rolling in with glee as they did in the GPPI discussion.

  8. I don't know much about the MPA program but SPEA and Bloomington are great. I lived in Bloomington for 8 years. My dad also went/taught at SPEA.

#2 overall can't be right. Maybe for some specializations, but definitely not overall. US News Rankings are generally crap.

In fact I think US News got it right here. They have some of the best placements and our extremely highly regarded in the policy world. I should add that this is the second oldest policy school in the country. You can still apply, the deadline is Feb 1.

  9. I was admitted to the MPA of Indiana University this morning.

Anyone care to share any thoughts about the program? It ranked 2nd in US News Top Public Affairs Programs. IMHO, that might be a little overrated. Your two cents?

I've heard really good things about the program. How long did it take them to get back to you after you applied. I am waiting to hear from them. Last year it appears that it only took them about a week to send out a decision but when I visited they said that it took around two weeks. What has your experience been?
