I haven't seen anyone post acceptances for Columbia yet, but I'd expect stuff in the next two or so weeks

Columbia acceptances and wait lists are out. Rejections will go out in mid-March.

I'm attending elsewhere--just passing on information that I have learned to help folks out.

In my experience, results at most schools are delivered in one of two ways: (1) acceptances go out first, wait lists and rejections go out later and simultaneously, or (2) acceptances and wait lists go out together, followed by rejection about a month later.

I applied at Harvard, Brown, UVA, UNT, and Brandeis. If previous years are any indication I won't hear anything until at least early February. Still checking daily though! LOL

Not true with Harvard. Interviews with finalists and acceptances take place well before anyone else hears anything (at least this was the case last year).

Hi!  I'm applying to Musicology as well, applied to 8 schools.  Where did you apply?  I'm a nervous wreck, and I'm constantly checking my email.  Most schools have already told me they won't review until January, but one school (Indiana) does....I think.  I have not gotten an interview invite (yet) from Indiana, and I'm not sure if they should have already been sent.  Ahhhhh

I just did a gradcafe results search, it looks like one person was sent a Musicology interview invite from Indiana on Dec 15th.

Yes, Indiana sends out interview invites in mid-December (I got mine last year).

  5. Good luck everyone! There are at least two schools that send out their interviews before the holidays. Last year, I received one in mid-December, and the other one should be coming your way next week (depending on your list of schools, of course). Also, don't forget that many schools make their decisions without interviews, so don't lose hope if you end the year on a negative note.

  6. Hi! I am also applying to PhD programs in musicology this fall and am re-taking the GRE this Thursday in hopes of boosting my quantitative score. If you're interested to see how your scores compare against other GRE-takers who intend to major in musicology, you can check out this chart from the ETS website: https://www.ets.org/s/gre/pdf/gre_table4_extended.pdf (the musicology info is on page 12) According to the data, your verbal score is a little low compared with other musicology scores, so a re-take may be worth considering. On the other hand, your quantitative score is outstanding (congratulations!), and your overall score is respectable.

Personally, I decided to take it again because I had time this summer to study and prepare. It sounds like you will have a lot going on, so I'm sure the decision for you will be a little more difficult. Maybe the writing score will help you decide one way or the other. In either case, good luck with applications!

    Hi everyone,

I am an international student, currently a second-year master student in musicology in an American university. I would like to apply Phd in musicology this upcoming fall. The following is my current status:

    GPA: master 4.0; undergraduate (musicology major as well) 3.87;

    Toefl: 111 (Reading 30; Listening 27; Speaking 26; Writing 28)

    GRE: Verbal 152, Math 167, Writing(unavailable now)

Paper: I might present a paper in a chapter conference this fall; I once published a critical paper in a non-English journal.

Currently, I am little bit worried about my GRE score, since I would like to apply those best programs in musicology.  I am afraid that I don't have enough time to work on GRE again, coz I need to take courses, revise my PS and papers.

But according to your experience, do you suggest I need to retake GRE again to get more than 155 in verbal section? I am not sure how much GRE will be evaluated by faculties in those best programs?

I think it very much depends on the individual institutions, but—from my experience—the scores don't really matter. My verbal score was same as yours. I applied to 5 musicology programs last year and got into 3 of them... Moreover, I received the best possible financial package from the one that stated an impossibly high standard as the average score for their accepted students on their website. My advice: put your money, time, and efforts into another aspect of your application.

  7. Anyone else happily overwhelmed with their big transition to Columbia? I've got less than a month until I move across the country and I'm trying to learn as much about NYC/Columbia as possible before I get there.

Right there with you!! I'm moving across country in just 3 weeks. Where are you coming from?

  8. Hi everybody! Just accepted the offer to do a PhD in Communications at the Columbia Journalism school.

I've been told that PhDs at the J-school are really unlikely to land housing, and that I should look off campus.

If anyone has that link referenced above, about a housing website other than UAH, I'd be grateful!

This is the link that I browsed today: https://ocha.facilities.columbia.edu

  9. I got a heads-up email on Sunday night (April 12), the official letter from the Graduate School went out April 14 and they gave me until April 17 to respond. Asking for a status update is not frowned upon-- I had done so twice before I received this offer from them.

  10. I had a major curve ball thrown my way last night... A positive one though  :) But this means that I still haven't committed.

So is it safe to assume that everyone has a "home" for next fall?

Are you leaving the New York area?

  11. I am currently waiting and hoping that I am taking out of the wait list. Ahhhh

Same here!! While I have a few acceptances, I am really hoping to score one of my wait lists (4 possibilities). I feel like getting a wait list is really not a decision but a prolongation of this torturing process...

  12. I'd say focus on things like gaining new perspectives, teaching styles, perhaps a different type of institution, networking with both current professors and new student body. Of course this very much depends on where you are at and where you are going... I'd say that there must be a reason of why you applied there in the first place, so—while being thankful about all your institution has done for you—explain why the other option will ultimately help you achieve your academic goals. Given that these people are your current advisors, they will want what's best for you and will not hold it against you.

  13. But on the other hand, don't feel obliged to rush into a decision. I had a really tough time deciding last year and made my pick about 3 days before the deadline. My decision actually changed around maybe April 10, and I'm very glad that I held out til I had all the info I needed rather than being pressured into choosing early just for the sake of wait lists. In the end, if you got a bunch of good offers you deserve to be in that position of making a call, and doing it on your own schedule. Once you have accepted an offer somewhere then yes, by all means the polite thing to do is to inform your other choices.

I'll second this. I was on a wait-list and was waiting until 3:30pm on April 15th for a person who was accepted to finally make their decision. That was somewhat unpleasant.

How do you maneuver through these last minute wait lists? I have 3 acceptances and 3 wait lists, and really want to wait it out. Did you receive a phone call at 3:30pm on April 15 and then had to change your decision? Did you end up emailing/calling your declined/accepted schools, since you didn't have enough time to mail your reply?

  14. I contacted Princeton to inquire about my status on the wait list and received a reply saying that the people on the wait list are not in any particular order. What is that about? Is their wait list really just a formality, since no one ever declines their offer?

  15. Harvard rejections ARE up. I missed the small "a decision has been made" link.

I never thought I'd be so excited for a rejection! I'm accepting my top choice now  :D  :D  :D  :D

Congratulations! I almost wish that all my wait lists were rejections, so that I can accept one of my offers without any doubts. But this way, I wonder if something better may open up if I just remain patient... I am so ready to figure out where I will end up!!!

  16. Hey everybody! I noticed that someone posted about a Yale Musicology PhD interview... does that mean that they have already offered the Yale Theory PhD interviews as well?

Also, any news on Harvard or Columbia?

    Best luck to everyone!

I had a Harvard interview a couple of weeks ago, but haven't heard from Columbia yet.

  17. Hey, just letting you two know that I was extended an invitation to interview last month for Northwestern and the actual interviews are next week....soo....sorry about that.

Your interview is in Ethnomusicology or in Theory? I think that might make a difference.
