Just found out I got off the wait list at Rice University! So EXCITED!!!
-
The same thing happened for me with my daughter yesterday. We made paper pinwheels instead of doing a candy for valentine's and it was a blissful worry free few hours. I'm going to make an effort to do these type of care free things with my kids now - next fall free time will be in shorter supply. (once we are all accepted to great programs!)

I didn't interview at the school I've been wait listed at either. I think Merivo is spot on. Email your POI and see if you can get the lay of the land.

Congrats to the Princeton admit!

Well I guess I should clarify my grandfather is from Faial, but my grandmother is from Funchal. She would find the distinction very important! Where did your family settle in the states. Mine are in Rhode Island.
-
I have a very similar background, both my grandparents are immigrants from the Azores. Where in Portugal is your family from?

I think you are absolutely correct. Most of us have excellent grades, have worked hard to get this far and are probably "type A" achieving personalities. We feel awful about rejection because we just aren't used to it. I keep reminding myself that acceptances is really about "fit" and the circumstances of this application season and not a comment on my ability or "worthiness."

I know there are forums for rejections and acceptances, I thought those of us that have been wait listed might need a place to worry too. I've been wait listed at Rice. Anyone else in the same boat? Thoughts? Strategies? Positive Vibes?

Are you both members of MESA? Perhaps at a minimum you could be on a panel together?
-
I should have shared mine. Ussama Makdisi at Rice - he works on missionaries and transnational history between the US and Levant. I work on gender issues specifically, but besides that our interests are very similar.

In a feeble attempt at distraction .... If you could choose anyone (not necessarily their institution) to work with - who would it be?
-
Thanks so much for the information!

Does anyone have experience with wait lists? Do you normally have to wait until the April 15th deadline to find out?

Long time lurker finally posting for the first time. I have 4 kids and am 35. I did the nontraditional route as well. Got a BA in history, joined the Army, went back for my Masters in history, spent a number of years as an independent scholar writing and teaching and now I'm back. I don't think programs are really concerned with the children issue. I had 1 when I got my Masters and was pregnant with my second for much of that period. I think they want to see a proven academic record and determine if you are the right fit.
