  1. each person i've talked to at columbia has said something different. not a very friendly/forthcoming dept. in my opinion

That's great news and encouraging! Keep us posted and fish for info if necessary ;)

  2. has anyone gotten more scoop on columbia? if we didn't hear this weekend... are we out? any tidbits appreciated! gracias amigos.

Could the person that has been unofficially admitted to Columbia tell us more about the whole thing?

    thanks!!

  3. acceptances went out last week... the rest of those interviewed are on a waitlist.

Just playing the waiting game... was wondering if anyone has heard from Duke, especially its Cultural Anth program?

  4. umm if you were not contacted by email for an interview at the beginning of Feb. i'm 99% sure you were not accepted to the cultural anthro dept. sorry bud. they had 149 apps and i believe have admitted initially 5 students? you can call or email holly francis to confirm, she's really nice!

Hey, Ive applied for cultural anthro at Duke, do you know what stage the process is at? I havent heard a peep out of them. Others seem to be getting calls for interview, maybe i should just give up now :(

  5. you should ask where abouts you are one the list because it is a big one. that's what i did for uchicago and thankfully they were quite honest and said "the bottom" lol. so i got closure fast. good luck to you too!

Sooo... I just got confirmation of being on the waiting list for Duke. I am new to the system, but long waiting lists don't seem like a great idea- keeping up the expectation and I am not able to enjoy the other positive results, haunted by the "what if..." (luckily my plan Bs are nice and are happening...)

Good luck for your application results!

  6. hm i'm not sure about that bc a) some private universities' endowments got hit even harder just due to the way they managed their money overall (how much was in stock market, liquid assets, blah blah), and also some public universities are such phenomenal research institutions that they may either have deeper departmental pockets or have managed more conservatively and sustained more mild losses. i think it just depends on the institution too. i mean the UCs obviously are hurting in a major way, as is all of California, but some private institutions cut admits by over half this year, which suggests they're not faring better... it might be better to consider schools' situations individually?

hope that next year treats you better! good luck

I didn't get in my dream school this year and start to think how to improve myself next year. Because of the economy crisis. I wonder if I should shift my concentration from public school to private school since private school may still have some money leftover? Help me out! Thanks

  7. what areas would people recommend that I avoid looking for apartments/housing in? i mean... i dont want to hear Lady Gaga blasting from a party at 3 in the am you know? but i don't want to be surrounded only by families either...

  8. anyone have any new updates on this front? it's my last school to hear from and then this whole process is over!! which will be very nice.

Awesome. It seems like EVERYTHING will be decided in 2 weeks. Ahhhh.

  9. OK the deal with Duke... the dept. finally forwarded their decisions to the grad school, which apparently took time because they're on some new system and no one quite understands it. i believe accepted students were notified yesterday... but given some apparent systemic issues it's possible acceptances students could be getting emails today. the grad coordinator wouldn't tell me my status but she did tell me that everyone not accepted from the interview pool will be waitlisted. I think they also ended up having few spots available than they anticipated based on a convo with POI... sooo... i want to say if you havent heard then you're on the waitlist (join my club)... but I wouldn't take me to be the definitive source... unfortunately if you call Holly wont tell you lol

and columbia... i dont think theyre done yet. last year i had a friend who found out last week of march, tho i suppose accepted students hear earlier

Congratulations for those who are securing places! What a long long month this is....

Has anyone heard back from Duke cul anth after the interview? And are there any news about Columbia? Everything seems to be silent...

    Thanks!

  10. the chicago situation is definitely true. i think you can definitely email a prof of interest or someone who read your app and ask questions along the line of "what for next time?" but also this year is tough, the economy is tough, schools are struggling. for sure. but i think it's within your rights to look for some constructive criticism (as long as you frame it as such)

    I got another rejection: Stanford.

If what you say about Chicago is true, then my only hope is Columbia. I also applied to the NSSR but I donĀ“t think that I'll get funding and even if UNC accepts me, I'm not sure I want to go there.

I hope some day I'll thank destiny/fate/the stars for all these rejections.

Do you know if one can ask the departments to tell you why the application was not competitive?

    thanks!

Applied: Berkeley, Stanford, Columbia, UNC, NSSR, Chicago

    Rejected: 2

    Waiting: 4

  11. Vanishing - same deal for me w/ U Michigan. perhaps we will see each other there next year smile.gif (though I will never admit I was on grad cafe/ stalked grad cafe for a solid month of my life )

Yeses today from Michigan and Rice! Rice sent the decision via snail mail, the first one I've received that way, while my POI at Michigan sent me an e-mail to congratulate me and let me know that the official letter will be coming. He made it sound like Michigan will be offering five-year funding packages to all of its admits this year, at least on the sociocultural side. Which is AMAZING news--I had heard that funding was quite uneven at Michigan, and that this created an awkwardly competitive dynamic within the graduate cohort. Interesting to hear that they're moving away from that model.

Very, very happy tonight. Tough decisions ahead. Hang in there, everyone!

  12. lol that is a good point. this process is just.. brutal! c'est la vie, i suppose

I talked to her a few days ago and she said all of the decisions had been made, and they're just figuring out the funding and will let applicants know by the end of the month. At this point they'll say anything just to stop us from calling, so I think we just have to stick it out.

  13. hmm talked to the grad coordinator today and she said another 3-4 weeks before decisions are made... mysteries...

I was the informal rejection and I had applied for socio-cultural, but I have no idea where they are in the official notifying process. I applied to two depts at UMich, got into one (Asian Lang & Culture), and my potential advisor in AL&C said the anthro department had finalized decisions and I didn't get in. Unfortunately he didn't say anything else about anthro's time frame so I can't shed much light on it for anyone else. Best of luck to all though, I hope folks hear soon!
