  1. Oh, nice! That sounds promising. RPI seems like a really cool place -- what did you like about it during your visit?

Just got word that my official funding offer is coming today. SO RELIEVED. 8 months of waiting are over, and I finally get to be back in school again ahhh.

I liked the department in general. It's super interdisciplinary, with faculty coming in from a variety of different fields. While it's not a huge rhetorical theory place, the rhetoric faculty that are there mesh with my interests almost perfectly. I also think it's a good idea to force myself  to orient my work towards tech based stuff and play up the tech school background I accidentally will have (Georgia College, Texas Tech, and RPI). I imagine that will help me loads in the job hunt. All of that, along with the realization that they pursued me very hard, makes the place quite appealing.

In the  end though I'm just happy that it's dooonneeee. Time for this kid from the south to freeze his butt up north.

  2. Less than a week left! Anyone still deciding?

Waiting, really. I want to accept my RPI offer since the school has blown me away. However, funding is an issue. The place is expensive. They apparently only had one assistantship to offer, and it went to someone else. Fortunately, it went to someone that the grad direct suspect will decline the offer, which means it comes to me. I was also told that they would attempt to make room for me in their budget if this didn't happen, which is nice (I can tell they want me). But, right now I'm just waiting. Obviously everything will happen before the 15th, but I just want to know.

If it all falls apart, which it shouldn't, I'm just going to accept my Duquesne offer.

Can anyone guide me to where I can find the most up to date school rankings?? Every ranking I have seen is different, and I am having a really hard time making my decision of what school to go to...

Make you decisions based on what's best for you and your career, not on a subjective ranking list. The usa/forbes lists are suspect anyways, and  the NCA stuff is already seriously outdated.

Which place has faculty that you work with well? How about research areas that you like? That's what you need to looks for, even if it ends up being south central louisiana tech.

Realistically, ranking and name recognition are the last things that will aid you in the long run. What it comes down to is how hard you work and how well those around you aid in that. Connections don't hurt, but you can make them from anywhere.

  4. For all of you media comms people out there that are terrified you may not get in somewhere or are just interested in checking out something else because your options aren't what you wanted, look into Texas Tech. I did my masters there in comm studies when it was only a terminal masters, so we got full funding and assitantships automatically with admission.

This coming year they'll be starting their phd program, and have a few spot that come with full funding. The comms department has moved from arts and sciences to the college of mass comm, so there will be a ton of faculty options beyond what I had, as well as the chance to orient yourself toward more media related things (I did rhetorical theory myself). It really provides the best of both worlds. I'm also aware that they plan on shaping the program around the first few cohorts, so you'd have a chance to do what you want with the entire college at your disposal.

That said, I am uncertain if they have filled all the spots since not too many people know of it, so it could be a nice chance to grab funding and a spot in a new place. For all of it's pros, tech is horrible a recruiting, so it could work to your benefit.

Also, for what it's worth, my masters program got me into two PhD schools and wait-listed at two others, so I can promise that the education is quality.

If anyone has interest in it, I can help hook you up with someone to talk to or answer any questions.

  5. Hello, I'm a Bachelors in Engineering - Instrumentation applying to Masters in Media studies/ Communications 2016! Can someone give me some insight ? Is there anyone who's changed fields here? Should I opt for more interdisciplinary programs ? I know what exactly I want to study/research on but I don't know what choices to make ! HELP HELP ! Panicking majorly !

What do you want to study? There are a fair few schools who do tech oriented communication. Seems as if it'd be a good fit for you.

  6. Hey chris! Nick

Just wanted to encourage you to be really cautious about sinking loan $ into a doc program. The way academic hiring looks ATM, it's kind of like investing in beanie babies or something.

I know, I don't plan on sinking loan money in. Like I said, stipend and such included, tuition will be paid for. I'll just have to find employment for living expenses, which sucks, but c'est la vie. If I can't find adjunct positions, then I can continue being a line-cook. It's not my top choice for a course of action, but I've cooked at some 5 star places, so I know I can get the work with chef connections and whatnot. It's what I'm doing right now anyways since I've been finished with my M.A. since May.

In any case, I have until April to see if any funding or other offers some along. No rush. In the mean time I'll be roasting myself in front of a saute station.

  7. So, finally talked to the graduate adviser funding from Duquesne. Apparently, since it's a private university assistantships are limited. One may come available, but in the mean time I'm offered the chance to adjunct one class, which will give me half tuition remission and enough stipend to cover the rest of the cost. As far as living money, there are "many opportunities to adjunct at community colleges around Pittsburgh, as well as multiple other employment potentials."

I've been sleuthing the CVs of recent Duquesne grads, and this seems typical. Most have exactly three years of assistanships.

That said, it's a doable situation. I taught 2-3 classes per semester at TTU for my assistantship, plus the graduate full-time load here is 3 more hours per semester than most places, so teaching/work outside of the the university shouldn't be terrible in comparison.

I'm also making attempts to figure out RPI's funding scheme. I've gotten into two private schools thus far, and what that means money wise is slowly sinking in.

  8.

Wow! What was the quant score if you don't mind my asking? Glad you're being recommended for admission!

I took it when it was still in the old format, but it works out to me getting 145 and the school requiring 146 minimum. My other scores are astronomically higher, I'm just not the best at math (hooray rhetoric), and took the class almost 4 years after what was then my most recent math class. That all said, my study area has nothing to do with quant, hence the petition.

Still wishing I had retaken it now. I know my score would have been way higher across the board, but applying to grad school is expensive, yo.

  9. Just talked to RPI. Apparently the department there recommended me for admission but has to petition the dean because my 4 year old GRE quant score is 1 point to low. One. Point.

I took the test 2 years out of undergrad, a while ago. I was hoping that the strength of my application would carry me over, but whoops haha.

"Thank you for your inquiry.  Please know that we are impressed by your credentials and hope that you can join us in the fall."

  10. Awesome!  I double majored in phil and comm as an undergrad and did an MA focused on phil.  I always thought I was going to be a philosopher, but within the last semester I decided to move into comm/rhetoric.  Which is funny since I'm currently finishing up my thesis in straight up analytic epistemology.  I'm interested in minority dialogue, philosophy of rhetoric (especially epistemic rhetoric) and rhetoric of science and religion.  What are your specific interests?

I thought about it, but the same thing that turned you off to Pitt turned me off to Duquesne.  I had two phone interviews scheduled with them and they never followed through either time.  At Pitt on the other hand I had a 2:30 hour long conversation with my prospective POI.

By the by, are you going to the phil of comm conference in Pitt later this semester?

That's funny, I'm the opposite. I almost tried to make a jump to phil, but ended up not doing it. I figure that you get a lot of leeway regarding what to read/study at this level, so I stayed with where my application would be strongest.

You would have loved my thesis adviser. He's way into epistemic rhetoric. I taught a rhetoric in western thought class where he helped with the course planning and such, and he basically insisted that I make the final paper something along the lines of "how do you know what you know? Prove it with your rhetorical context."  ...they hated us.

I'm interested in being the boring old Burke guy (I like writing about how he relates to other rhetorical systems) and comparative rhetorical theory. That said, I did my thesis on rhetorical theory's relationship to comedy,

I'll be at ECA in Phili  in April, but that's it. I'm not technically a student right now, so I don't have access to funds. I applied to ECA because the chair of the the phil comm division was from Duquesne and I wanted the exposure. I ended up winning the top paper and got put on a panel where I am literally the only person, including respondents, not from Duquesne. Can't even make that up. So....I kind of have to go now even though it will be out of pocket. Whoops.

Who knows, maybe we'll both end up in Pittsburgh and we can high-five all rhetorically.

  11. Congrats!  I assume you're interested in rhetoric and phil?  That's one of my interests as well.   I thought about applying there but didn't end up doing it.

Yeah, I did my masters/bachelors in the area. What exactly are you interested in studying. I love the stuff, but it's difficult to find a lot of programs that really truly will foster it. For whatever reason, a ton of those programs are in the city of Pittsburgh haha. I'm excited to go after being in west Texas for so long.

You should have applied! It's a great program, and I was pleasantly surprised to find that it was a free application.

I'm also very interested in Pitt, though some of the difficulty I've had trying to communicate with the department there is a massive turn-off. Every answered e-mail comes with three unanswered. It seems to be a persistent problem.

  12. I've been lurking here and reading for some time, but figured I'd share that I received acceptance from Duquesne's rhetoric Ph.D. the other day. I haven't seen any one else here waiting for it, but maybe the information helps some other "lurkers."

Still waiting to here from Maryland, Pitt, and RPI.  That said, I'm very happy with what happened.

    Also, congrats to erryone!

Also also, my thing says I applied for 2013. That's a lie. My applications do not travel through time as far as I'm aware.
