  1. Thanks songofgallifrey. I'm planning to mentioned a theme that came up in a recent interview that I thought was important and a recent reminder of why I'm interested in my research topic. I have other background experiences that tie into this person's story but my personal background highlights somewhat different parts of this story. The interview also reflects some of the difficulties navigating the systems put in place to help people in these circumstances, which is what I want to highlight with using the interview. I.e. this reminded me of why this issues is so important and then give a short paragraph about one of the issues this person faced navigating the system and then go into my current research (which addresses issues related to this person's story).

  2. Hey Everyone,

I had a question about the personal statement. I recently conducted an interview for one of my courses and wanted to include some details from this interview but wasn't sure if this is appropriate. I would get the respondent's permission to include this information before submitting the personal statement I wasn't sure if this would be seen as misusing that person's story.

  3. Hi. I've applied to UConn for Phd Sociology. Have any of you applied there? If yes, have you heard from them?

I emailed Mary Fischer on 3/5 and got the follow response, "This process can go on until mid-April.  I know the uncertainty can be frustrating but we basically can only make offers when we know we can fully fund a student.  Thus applicants have to turn us down (or new monies must come in) before we can extend new offers"

If you decided to email her and get an update, please let me know.

  4. I know this is a bit off topic, but this seems like the most popular thread on here.Does anyone have any opinions about the University of Connecticut? It's a lower ranked program but it seemed to have attracted a lot of younger faculty who are getting published in a fair amount of top journals in recent years. I'm currently waitlisted but trying to get a better sense of the program in case I do get taken off the waitlist. Any thoughts or opinions about the program would be greatly appreciated.

  5. Deciding between UC Irvine and UCLA. Area of interests are immigration, race and ethnic relations, social stratification, cultre. Especially focusing on Asian American community. Both programs are very good fit and very well established! However I have heard rumors like "UCLA expects you to drop out," so I'm a little worried about the program culture there. Any suggestions?

I would not be surprised if this was true. I found the below link when I first started to apply  to programs. According to the document, the rate of completion within 10 years for UCLA is 56%. I don't know how accurate this number is, but it seems that the other information on the document is pretty accurate. With that being said, I still decided to apply to UCLA and would probably still attend if given the opportunity. I don't know how much weight you can put on this, but every encounter I have had with Wendy Fujinami has been really positive. I'd definitely be a little bit worried about the culture at UCLA, but I'd also not rush to any decisions. It seems that your a good fit for both programs, so perhaps the safest option is UC Irvine. But, I wonder what is driving the low completion rate at UCLA, if true, and how your fit with the program might influence your experience with the program.

  6. Anybody have any information on Boston College or USC? Emailed BC today and they said "All applications for Sociology are currently under review and decisions will be mailed out shortly." but I saw an acceptance from the 13th on the results search??

I sent Lynne Casper (USC) an email on Friday but haven't heard anything back. I emailed Lynne a question about admission 3-4 months ago and she took about 7-10 days to get back to me. If I hear anything back from her I'll make sure to post an update on here.

  7. Would someone explain how results are reported to the results page search engine here? Is it done by us or by the depts/admissions offices @ the schools? No one's explained it before.CUNY was nice enough to promptly respond to my limbo status within 24 hours of me asking, w/the expected reject.

I wonder if I'm one of those 5 rejects listed today, though obviously I didn't report it. I'm left feeling as crushed as the rest of you who haven't gotten in anywhere (even though I got into 1 place). My cv (meaning the total package of all my skills and experience) and math gre suck and I guess having 3 a minuses in course credits there and a ma w/an even higher  gpa in diff field from another local school isn't enough for their ad comms. I'm not the perfect fit, it's probaby not the best dept there for me and I didn't flirt w/the ad comm chair b/c his interests had little to do w/mine. I dunno I think genuinely they made the mistake, I was clearly smarter than some of my classmates from that dept in the small seminar I just aced. I know this'll upset some people but thats just true. That said, this was my best shot to stay home in nyc and I've lived here over 15 years so I have reaons to want to stay. It's still a good dept faculty wise and there were enough people close to my interests, I shouldn'tve been rejected and it just  makes things more difficult in my personal and every other area of life, I don't need any more of this! I get it hits close to home also  b/c the Marxist depts are the ones rejecting me as well, it's the fact that it's here on top specifically of schools like Berkeley, Santa Barbara and to some extent Wisconsin (applied to nyu in another field for some specific reasons, that isnt gonna work out probably either).

Sorry to hear about the rejection. I'm already thinking about how I can strengthen my applications for next year.  Can I ask, who did you reach out to at CUNY? I haven't heard anything back from them and am curious on when I can expect to hear back from them.

  8. I still haven't heard anything, I checked the email and the site. If I don't hear anything by Monday, should I email/call them?

I still haven't heard anything back from UCLA either, no email and no admission decision on the website. It looks like there were a lot more rejection posts on the admission results page last year, so perhaps they will be sending more out in the next day or two? Not sure. Has anyone else who applied to UCLA not gotten an acceptance or rejection notice?
