  1. Hi everyone...

I hope by now some of you who wrote on here had already gotten the awaited answer, be it good or bad. Anyway, here's an update, I called the department and was informed by the admin officer that the official result will be released this Friday, if not latest by Wednesday for the Graduate Dean's Office to release it to the system. I did ask her if she has the result on her hand, she was hesitant and told me that she was not authorized to release it over the phone. How cruel...Anyway, from her tone, I could gauge that it is going to be a rejection for me...but for the rest of you, I wish you all the best!

Hi ELB, I am really sorry to hear this. I will pray for your application, pray that you will face your result with peace no matter what it maybe. Please take a good care of yourself. You will be awesome, don't be dismayed by the application results.

  2. Have other people had luck with phone calls to departments? how often does no response mean a rejection vs a wait list?

It depends on whether you have a POI or not. If you have a POI, you can email the POI directly with you updated resume and just say that you hope this will help your application. Usually, POI will let you know your current application status. If you don't have a POI, you just have to call the department assistant. Usually, the assistant is nice, but if they are busy, they probably won't talk to you for so long and give you too much information. I felt for you, waiting totally sucks! I called the department assistant yesterday for my application status update, she was nice and said that she will email me today with more information, but she didn't... I would just give them couple of days because this must be a very season for them.. Good Luck!!

  3. Ahhhh I don't know, I'm just still so excited! I can't stop dancing everywhere, haha. Um... as of right now I accepted Laurier and I'm going to Laurier but if Carleton comes to me with an offer I'll have to assess the situation then. I really don't know what I would do. Carleton was my first choice  because it's not far from Montreal and my partner's family. Also, my partner and I wouldn't mind establishing ourselves in Ottawa so in terms of the future it would be perfect, but on the other hand I'm assuming Waterloo might have cheaper living expenses etc (which I'm not sure of) so it honestly depends on finances, our future plans, future work opportunities, so many things. I really don't know. We would have to sit down and write our pros and cons list and seriously consider both options. As of right now however, I'm choosing to believe that I am attending Laurier :)

I am also waiting for Laurier's official offer. I am just wondering around what time (morning 10:00am or afternoon 3:00pm etc. )did you receive the offer?

  4. I think most of the time skills and experiences are transferrable, so you really need to have a coherent story in your statement about how your experiences connect to social psychology and how the skills you gained contribute to your further study. Also, you just applied 5 schools which are not enough. As you mentioned, it's a competitive process. I will recommend you to apply at least 8 schools and have one or two low-profile schools.

  5. I was a RA for 2.5 years. At beginning, I felt the same way that I am just free labor and all the work I did was mechanical and of course boring. After about 3 months, the graduate students in the lab started to assign me to do more intellectual work. I think the reason why they trust me is because I was always the one who is willing to do extra work and take responsibility for things. I agree with others suggestions, it is important to be active and show your passion. Also, you need to let them know what do you hope to gain through your experiences at the lab. For example, you can tell them you hope to get your name on one or two posters and you are willing to anything that will help you achieve this goal. Generally, it takes time to gain trust and respect from others, just don't be shy to show you are capable of doing! Good Luck!

  6. I called the department today, the lady who answered the phone was really nice. She told me that the department already recommended me to the graduate office. But my file is on hold now, she will keep me updated if she knows why my file is on hold. I am just glad that I know what is going on, I am more confident that I will be receiving the offer within a few days.

  7. I applied to a total of 4 different PhD programs and have yet to receive notifications from any of them, rejections or acceptances. Online I have seen people getting both accepted and rejected but my notifications and inbox remain empty. Does this mean I am wait-listed? or rejected? does it hurt my chances if I email or call the departments to ask?

I applied for some jobs as a back up and I am starting to get interviews and offers so the sooner I can hear from the grad schools the better because I don't want to turn down a good job offer through my waiting.

Additionally, one of the schools I applied for was VCU where I applied to both the PhD and masters program. I got an acceptance letter for the masters but have not heard anything about the PhD, did I get rejected for the PhD through my acceptance for the masters?

I think you should call the department to inquire your application status, if you are on waitlist, you can ask them approximately when you will hear the results. I suggest call them instead of emailing them, because that would be way faster.. BEST OF LUCK

  8. Around the middle of March, my POI told me that I am in and will receive an offer and she would like to talk about the offer with me if I want to. Then, I emailed her back and let her know I am excited and definitely look forward to knowing more about the offer from her. However, It has been 2 and a half weeks, she didn't reply me. I emailed the department assistant on March 30th to inquire my application status, the assistant didn't reply me either. I also called the graduate office, the person who answered the phone told me that they didn't receive department's  admission recommendation for me. Now, I am not sure what should I do, should I call the department tomorrow? or should I just wait?

    Thanks!

  9. Tomorrow is March 31st, fingers crossed that I will receive the official decision. I find that the longer that I wait, the more that I want to let go of everything. I start to doubt myself why I am so obsessed with checking emails. What is the whole point of all these anxieties, fears and nightmares? I don't think we are defined by whether we can receive an offer or not. Yeah... it's a cliche: when one door closed, another door will open. Nonetheless, it maybe true. Let's give ourself a break to enjoy the life and to love the ones around us. The decision will come eventually, why don't we just relax and wait for it?

  10. Glad to know I'm not the only one.... worse, I felt like I was given a false hope. My POI informed me that my application has been recommended at once for admission. Sadly, he has been quiet ever since.

I got the similar situation here. My POI did not reply me for two weeks since she told me I am in.

  11. Has anyone heard back from Wilfrid Laurier University? I was sent an email from the administrative assistant in mid February saying that they are offering me admission to the MABE (MA in Business Economics) program. But, its been a month now and I still haven't received an official offer of admission letter from them! I've called them twice and they kept telling me that it'll take a few more days. It's been a week now. Anyone have a similar experience or know what's taking them so long??

Hi Pugsandhugs, I received my unofficial offer from the POI, it has been two weeks, I still did not receive the official offer. I emailed the graduate office today, hopefully they will reply me tomorrow.
