Considering that I applied to Penn (and had tangential interests to Richter)... ouch. Apply ointment to the burn?
I am not trying to say that any one of your particular applications was weak but interesting to think that a group of applications could be considered weak...i wonder if this speaks to history education at the undergraduate level, writing, more people applying due to their not being jobs and they just want to do something? just interesting to speculate about.

much talk at the OAH this year about how for the first year, there was a big drop in the quality of graduate applications. Specifically said by Daniel Richter at Penn and agreed upon by others. I wonder why this is....just something I felt was worth sharing. Been a long time lurker.

that was actually his phrasing, and I am pretty sure he meant ever or at least in his time of reading and assessing applicants (which has been a while)
