April 15th is almost here! Is there anyone else who still hasn't committed yet? I know that I need to decide within the next couple of days, but I'm having a really hard time weighing the pros and cons of my options. I've narrowed it down to two schools, but I'm on a waiting list at a school that would definitely be in the mix were I to hear from them in the next couple days. Anyway, congrats to those who have already committed, and good luck to anyone else who is still trying to figure everything out!

@mmmarimba Congratulations!!

I'm right there with you, frantically trying to finish my MA thesis! I'm still waiting on one school, so I assume at this point it's either a rejection or an unofficial wait list. I have three acceptances, but none with compelling financial offers so I'm not sure what I'm going to do. I'm negotiating with a couple of the schools for more funding, so we'll see what happens. Good luck with your thesis!

@ShostieHue Yes, this was for PhD.

@ShostieHue I did not apply to Northwestern, but I have a friend who has been accepted. Not sure when they were informed of the decision, but it was at least a couple weeks ago. @NightGallery Sorry to hear about your results I hope that whatever you decide to do now goes well for you! Congratulations on your upcoming graduation from your professional degree!

Haha... That's amazing! Congratulations! Nice of them to not keep you in suspense

@Glinkasfriend: Welcome! Good luck with the rest of your applications! I'm still waiting on 3...
-
Sorry to hear that, felagund! I'm getting more and more nervous as February drags on.

I think that's a very real possibility for me as well, based on a couple of the admits that have popped up on the results page. I'm already mulling over a Plan B or even Plan C for next year. It's so difficult not knowing what I'll be doing or where I'll be! Anyway, I definitely know how you guys feel...

I didn't apply there, but a musicology Stanford acceptance was just posted on the results page, if that helps to clarify anything. (Congrats to that person!)
-
Congratulations! Best of luck with your interview! Glad that our little sad-streak on the forum has taken a turn for the better. Congrats also to the UChicago admit... I am insanely jealous!
-
Me too... saw it first thing when I woke up. *angst*

Today I got an email from Admissions at one of the schools I applied to... but it was only to tell me that they were missing part of my application.
-
Oh, man. I would've freaked out a little, too. I get nervous every time I see that I have a message in my spam folder just in case it might have been from a school...
-
Yes, come join us on the other thread! You will see that a couple of people have gotten interview invites, but other than that, no one's posted about hearing anything back from schools yet. Welcome to the waiting game, and good luck with your applications!

I'm definitely feeling the "loss and emptiness" right now... especially since I'm now finished with finals and papers for the semester! I know I should be excited for break, but I feel so purposeless... I'm just relieved to know that I'm not the only one who experiences this at the end of big projects! I submitted 7 applications total and have one interview lined up so far, but don't expect to hear from any of the other schools until after break. Anyway, I hope all of you have a delightful break! Maybe the new Star Wars movie will distract us all from our application-induced restlessness

I'm not sure what kind of entrance exams you'll be taking for Choral Conducting, but I found this website to be extremely useful when reviewing for the ear training portion of the entrance exam at my current MA institution: http://www.musictheory.net/exercises Just scroll down to the "ear training" section.

Glad to hear that, felagund! My recommendations are all in as well, and I submitted the three applications that were due today. Now it's time to get ready for round two!
-
I'm in the exact same boat!
-
Hi Everyone, Application deadlines are looming! Any other current applicants out there getting ready to submit (or maybe you're on top of things and have already submitted)? Any past applicants with words of wisdom for us as we put the final touches on our SOPs and start the torturous waiting game?

questions about musicology phd application (Fall 2016)
ShadowCat replied to musicologypl's topic in Music
Hi! I am also applying to PhD programs in musicology this fall and am re-taking the GRE this Thursday in hopes of boosting my quantitative score. If you're interested to see how your scores compare against other GRE-takers who intend to major in musicology, you can check out this chart from the ETS website: https://www.ets.org/s/gre/pdf/gre_table4_extended.pdf (the musicology info is on page 12) According to the data, your verbal score is a little low compared with other musicology scores, so a re-take may be worth considering. On the other hand, your quantitative score is outstanding (congratulations!), and your overall score is respectable. Personally, I decided to take it again because I had time this summer to study and prepare. It sounds like you will have a lot going on, so I'm sure the decision for you will be a little more difficult. Maybe the writing score will help you decide one way or the other. In either case, good luck with applications! -
Thanks MathCat and Rich - that makes me feel a little less paranoid!

Hello All, I first took the GRE in 2012 and am planning on re-taking it this August. I read on the ETS website that for tests taken after July 1, 2014 the essay responses will be available to designated score recipients. I don't know about you, but that bit of information completely changes the way I will approach the analytical writing section this time around. Does anyone have any thoughts on this? I remember when I took it previously, one of the questions was politically charged - will admissions committees reading these essays see them merely as essay exercises, or as glimpses into our personalities and positions? Last time I took the test I ended up arguing a position that was not what I personally believed because I thought it would be easier to defend using the preferred GRE essay format. Should I avoid that tactic this time around? And to anyone who knows about how institutions receive scores: the ETS website mentions a "portal" through which the essays can be accessed by institutions. Is this the same way that institutions receive scores, or is this an extra step that admissions committees would have to go through? Do admissions committees really read these essays? Here is the link to the ETS page: http://www.ets.org/gre/revised_general/scores/?WT.ac=grehome_grescores_150213 Here is the relevant text from the ETS page:
