Are there really so few Princetonians in grad cafe ? It's a small school, but less than 10 ?

Yeah, it is really expensive. And so are most top private schools. Btw, I've rejected a EE fellowship offer. So, that's one freed up already. All the best for your grad career.

You still have an opportunity to secure funding, but those decisions will come only after April 15th. If any student with aid rejects Stanford's offer, they will distribute those funds to others. In the meantime, it might be wise to evaluate your other options.

Hi Guys, I've been admitted to the Ph.D program in EE at Stanford and Princeton University, both with first year fellowships. I'm half way around the globe now and cant possibly attend their visit day. My areas of interest include photonics/optoelectronic devices and solid state in general. Which do you think is a better school to attend? While it is not very difficult to get the advisor we want at Princeton, it becomes more of a problem at Stanford where there are lots of students probably vying for the same prof (if he/she is famous) and the dreaded EE Quals that we have to pass. But Stanford is known to be quite strong in this area of research. However, Princeton has the IVY reputation. Kindly provide your views. Thanks.

Thanks for your views. However, in my area of research (Photonics/mesoscopic systems), there are some very famous profs at both the places. Given that the coming graduate class at stan is much larger than at Princeton, I wonder if it'll become very competitive to get the advisor you want. Though Stanford is a great place, I woudn't want to end up in a bad group. Moreover, we have the EE Quals which we'll have to clear. (supposed to be quite tough). Although Princeton does not rank in the top 10 in EE rankings, the work going on in solid state physics and devices is pretty good. Funding beyond the year of the fellowship also seems to be a problem at Stanford.

Hi All, I've been admitted to the Ph.D program in EE at Stanford and Princeton with first year fellowships. I am interested in the area of solid state electronics, more specifically optoelectronics/photonics and mesoscopic physics. Which of the two univs, do you think, is better in this area ? Some of the facts include: 1. Large incoming class at Stanford, therefore, more sharing of resources. Princeton admits only around 30 EE graduates. 2. Location. Stanford is in the bay area, so obviously at an advantage. 3. Both are well respected school. Thanks.
