  1. If you haven't heard back from UT-A yet, you might not want to hold your breath. If you're in, they usually get back quickly, and the visiting weekend is coming up on the 27th. I participated in an REU program at UT and was rejected. I only know because the professor I worked with (and who wrote one of my recs) told me. From inside information (as I understood it, anyway), they first used a math formula that weights the GRE and GPA to blindly cut applicants down to ~160. The top of that list essentially gets automatically accepted, and everyone else with high/intermediate scores have their applications scrutinized more closely. Overall, they only accept ~30. My scores were 800 Quantitative, 480 Verbal, 4 Analytical Writing, and GPA of 3.83 which wasn't good enough for the first cut. Thanks to the UT professor who wrote my rec, I was later accepted with the caveat of having to work for him. In other words, if you do get rejected, don't feel bad -- they have a really strange method for granting admissions. To counter, I was accepted at UCSB, Berkeley, and U Delaware (all better programs for my area of interest) with no hitches. I am also waiting on MIT, but it's the bottom of my list. Whether we'll know it or not, see some of you at the visits! Good luck, everyone!
