I'm curious about a quantitative question that I was asked on a practice GRE test.

A, B, and C are the lengths of the sides of the triangle. Quantity A is 2b and Quantity B is a+b+c.

When drawing a picture for this question, how do I know which triangle to use and which side is a, b, or c? I know I can substitute any number in for the variable to determine whether value A or B is greater, but I'm not sure how to draw the triangle.

    Please help!

    is the  answer B?

I know the initial conditions of my first take of the GRE strongly affected my scores, especially verbal. Now that I'm almost done my MA, the concepts aren't that foreign. I've found that I fall for particular traps largely because I don't pay enough attention to the specifics of questions. A little bit of practice on that front will probably secure me staying around that score (which is what I'm hoping for). Reviewing my mistakes through Magoosh has reminded me of some basic concepts I still know but forgot to apply and specific areas to focus. I have a plan for the weekend, I just need to stick with it.

    @sriz1

Thanks for the tip. I have the 8 books from Manhattan, which are useful refreshers and full of good strategies in the areas of math that I struggle (and some good verbal recommendations too. Writing isn't something I'm worried about, and to be honest the first time I wrote the test I went in having never written a practice questions though I did read what the questions were looking for. I know I'm in a different position than many people as writing is a core feature of what I do (and I also spend a lot of time writing as a hobby) whereas others don't have to focus on it at all. For people who aren't in my position (which is the majority of people) I would tell you to practice but write about things you're interested in. The ETS GRE website has their database of prompts for both issue and argument essays. It's worth skimming them and finding one that appeals to you. The first time you do it, don't time yourself. Break down the issue or argument. I always develop a structure first (during an exam or even a paper) and then step back before I write to see if all of these parts are cohesive. If each part supports the next, as well as my overall argument, I move onto writing. As I write, I keep this structure in mind. If a new point comes up that I didn't initially think about, I add it in but I'm careful not to make it a tangent. Everything you present should be concise and related to your argument. Be specific and avoid using passive voice. I'm not sure if these things help, but I know writing about things I'm interested in both in terms of deconstructing arguments made in pieces (try doing it to news articles on topics of interest, or even journal articles in your field) and making a statement about something I'm interested in (do I fall into the same logical traps?)

    Hi,

Can you please let me know where can i find  prompts for both issue and argument essays  in  ETS GRE website ?

    Many thanks!!

Finally I can post in this thread! I prepped for about 2 months primarily with Magoosh. I watched all the video lessons, did all practice questions and used their vocabulary app. For me, it was a good preparation especially for the quant section, although it remained my weak section. Here are the practice tests I did and my results from the real GRE:

    12.10. (ETS I): V155 (67%), Q154 (56%) = 309
    21.10. (Free Manhattan Test): V158 (78%), Q152 (48%) = 310
    24.10. (Free Kaplan Test with 3Q): V149 (41%), Q158 (71%) = 307
    27.10. (ETS II): V161 (87%), Q157 (68%) = 318
    30.10. (GRE VQVQV): V163 (92%), Q155 (60%) = 318

I'm super happy with my verbal score, I just wished I had scored something like 2 points more in the quant section. I should say that I slept very bad the night before the GRE, so no optimal conditions, but I hope the results won't keep me out of a program. As others said, the ETS tests seem to be most predictive. I found the Kaplan verbal part really hard but not the quant section, which was really surprising to me as I had heard the opposite before. All in all, all the scores I got corresponded with my feeling of how well I did (except for the real GRE verbal part, I felt that I had to guess a lot during the last, hard verbal part).

    Congratulations:)

    Hi everyone,

i am in the train on my way back from my 2nd GRE. 155V, 154Q this time (147V, 151Q, 5.0 AW  first time) and I also expect quite good AW score on this one as well. I studied really hard for the past 2 months. I mainly focused on the V part (studied for the Q for only 2 days or so) and this is the result... quite discouraging, huh? :/ I am not a native speaker and I find it extremely difficult to memorize thousands of words. I did partially succeed in this, however, I was hoping for little higher score. I am applying to some of the top schools in the US (not the most competitive programs they offer but still need a good score..). In addition, I find writing essays much easier than taking tests. It might be "lame" to attribute my low scores to this but... I generally don't do well on tests. I have time to take GRE for 1 more time in the end of this month. I am just not confident that I will score higher on the V part. I think I can easily score higher on the Q but its the Verbal part that I need the most. The average of the accepted students in the program I am most interested in is 162V. I think this is just not achievable in my situation. I might be wrong, though, I did improve a lot from my first attempt but this time the challenge will be much bigger.. To make matters even worse, in the beginning I was hoping that good GRE score could balance my not-so-stellar GPA..

P.S. Will the fact that I am not a native speaker make the admission committee look more favorably upon my score?

    Congratulations:. nice improvement in verbal:)

  5. My progress thus far (along with rough dates) has been:

    26/9: ETS Paper 1 - 161Q / 164 V

    3/10: ETS Power Prep Test 1 - 170 Q / 161 V

    10/10: Manhattan Diagnostic - 167-170Q

    17/10: ETS Paper 2 - 163 Q / 165 V

    24/10: Manhattan Test 1 - 163Q / 160 V

    29/10: Manhattan test 2 - 163 Q / N/A V (just took the quant sections)

As everything seems to be hovering around the low 160s, the 170Q Powerprep result still seems a bit of an oddity. However, I'm clinging onto that with some hope that I can get the 165+ that I need as I have the actual GRE scheduled for a couple of weeks from now. Will update with additional practice tests and actual results in due course.

    Hi Rohanps,

I just started my preparation last week . can you please let me know what is Paper 1 test you mentioned here- 26/9: ETS Paper 1 - 161Q / 164 V . is it that PDF from ETS site?
