hi, ,am close to writing my GRE exam,so I practiced this argument essay, and wanted a review of my practice, please could you assess it.
Woven baskets characterized by a particular distinctive pattern have previously been found only in the immediate vicinity of the prehistoric village of Palea and therefore were believed to have been made only by the Palean people. Recently, however, archaeologists discovered such a "Palean" basket in Lithos, an ancient village across the Brim River from Palea. The Brim River is very deep and broad, and so the ancient Paleans could have crossed it only by boat, and no Palean boats have been found. Thus it follows that the so-called Palean baskets were not uniquely Palean.
Write a response in which you discuss what specific evidence is needed to evaluate the argument and explain how the evidence would weaken or strengthen the argument.
My response as follows:
Well, can this information given above really rule out that the woven baskets are not uniquely palean, thought the archaeologist may have found such woven basket in lithos ,if I may say from my little knowledge, the archeologist find out history from buried stones and all sort, given the situation that there was an earthquake in old times that may have moved such from the palean district to the lithos district, that will conclusively not mean it wasn’t originated from palean.
Also we can’t ascertain whether there was another route to go from palean to lithos which the archeologist have not inquired in detail, cause there might have been a way to send some items to the the lithos region or another point could be that in those days in order to make some religious rites they could have made such woven baskets to the so called “gods” and eventually it swam against the river and got to the lithos region.
Also any member who knew the skill from palean could have been involved in a water accident where he thought he could drown and later found himself in the lithos community, such person wasn’t God that could determine if he was going to make it alive to the other region and moved on with his life sharing the skill he already learned from his palean people, which also makes you consider did the archeologist just see one sample of it or several sample of it?
Then the archaeologist concluding that it is purely lithos doesn’t mean, cause it’s just a matter of who saw it first, does that mean that the second place it was found was the authentic originator? as that can’t be used to conclude, and it was not further stated if the age of the woven baskets seen can be compared maybe if such information was given ,we can make a conclusion from that.
Saying that such baskets cannot be categorically palean, there’s not enough information to conclude it isn’t.
