Thanks for the info, very helpful! Any tips on things to do for people who don't really go to bars or anything?

Eh, well the bar scene is the most popular thing to do. There are plenty of "older" bars though, you just have to find the right ones. Downtown also always has tons of concerts and festivals; the music scene is pretty big here. Tons of great local restaurants throughout the town too. There are also always plenty of sporting events to go to, which are pretty fun even if you're not super into sports. Other than that, I'll admit there's not too much to do; the town pretty much revolves around the university.

I'd also like to know this, I'm heading there as a PhD student over the summer.

I'm an undergrad here. Normaltown is a lot more chill and "hipster" and typically older people (grad students, young families). But a little far from campus (a couple miles). 5 points is also a good area; very close to (walkable to) campus and downtown. It is probably more undergrads than grads/families, but it is a good mix. I have lived in three different 4 bedroom apts in my time here and my rent ranged from $325 - $500 per room. For one bedrooms, they will be about $500 for the cheapest and $700 - $800 for nicer places.

Congrats!! I am also anxious about this funding! It's my top choice, and I want to make it work, but... it's pricey without funding.

I got the email to set up the school account about one week ago. The email with the PDF letter attachment came today (and the College letter was dated same day I received the email to set up the school account). It might just take them some time to get their ducks/letters in a row.

I don't mind sharing! The letters contained pretty standard info (e.g., my student ID #, how I'll need to perform to stay in the program if I choose to attend, etc.) and a form to complete if I want to attend by April 15th. The letter from the College said that I should be receiving an email from Dr. Steelman and the student-run mentor program soon... My guess is that that one would contain the information we're both waiting on! I'm also curious to see the mentor program in action, since I've heard really good things about it.

Great, thanks for the info! It's also my top choice out of the schools I've been accepted to :) hopefully we'll hear soon!

I received an email containing PDF letters from the Office of Graduate Admissions and from the College... nothing from the I/O program specifically. I am super excited to be admitted to the MS program, but funding is a concern. I am hoping that this information will come from the I/O program in the next couple of days, and that the fact that it isn't mentioned in these two letters doesn't mean I didn't get any funding...

Have you had any updates since posting this, Infinite544?

I also got accepted into the MS program, but I haven't received any info from anyone...just the email to set up my school email account. Super anxious to hear about funding. Do you mind sharing what the pdf letters said, Sospeso? Wondering why I didn't get those

  5. Ok, so one of my grad programs requires us to enter our SOP on the online application, but it has a word limit of 300! Which is super short, considering my SOP for most of my other schools is about 600 words. So obviously I had to cut out a lot, and I feel like it's really bad. I have to mail in other forms, so should I include my longer version SOP, since I feel that it's better written?

  6. For those of you that studied abroad for a semester and/or took a couple classes from a different school as a transient student, did you send all of the schools' transcripts? My home school's official transcript lists the grades and classes that I took at other schools, so it seems pointless to send the official transcripts from the other 2 schools. But one of my programs kind of seems like it wants all of the transcripts, but doesn't really say this directly.
