  1. I'm new to these forums!

Just got my financial aid package from Yale today for the MFA program in graphic design. I was waiting for the offer to decide whether or not I'm going to RISD (my first choice). Offer wasn't impressive...RISD it is! I'M SO EXCITED!!!!!!!!

So it is true there are people choosing RISD over Yale! RISD offered me A LOT more funding but I chose Yale anyway because I really like the program. But I remember Bethany of RISD asked all those who are accepted to reply by April 7. Do you get an extension?

Congratulations on your acceptances and good luck wherever you go!

  2. Hi Jestem!

I haven't gotten my admission packet yet. how is financial aid looking for you? '

Hi mnchick, I am greatly underwhelmed and disappointed when I received my financial aid packet. If I hadn't known it's a need-based aid instead of a merit-based one, I would have thought they don't really want me that much in the program. Even Calarts' looks more generous!

I guess I haven't demonstrated well my need for fundings in my application. Anyway, I talked to the lady who's in charge. She said she'll look over my case once I send in more information. Fingers and toes crossed!

    How's your looking for you?

  3. Hi everyone! I'm accepted to the School of Art and am moving to NH in August from Taipei. I too been looking for a place these days but it seems like a difficult task especially when I can't be there and see the place for myself. I'm wondering if grad apartments open to single students like me or they're for students with a family? I don't want to stay in the dorm but I'm definitely up for meeting new friends. God! give me a decent place (with decent rate)!

  4. So Jestem, does that mean you are going to CalArts and not Yale? You sound really excited about CalArts :)

I really like CalArts' program and the faculty but I think I'll still go to Yale. They have almost all the designers I've been dreaming of working with at Yale.

I was just saying among the 3 programs Suzie is decideing, I'll definitely go to CalArts :]

  5. I am accepted by SVA, CalArts and MICA's MFA Graphic Design.

What do you think which college is better to choose for MFA GD?

Definitely CalArts! I just finished talking with a Calarts student and had two chats with Lorraine Wild (I love her!!! She's a Yale graduate herself and one of the few designers that also write and actively involved with design practice and education). I get a VERY good impression for the faculty and the program overall. Lorraine also offers a list of visiting designers for my notes. I am just DAZZLED by that gorgeous list! They share with RISD and Yale many of designers on that list. And student along with the faculty worked out that list of visiting designers so you can rest assured that you can have a chance to invite the designers you admire. MICA is also an amazing program. Ellen and Jennifer is doing a lot to make sure that the students is provided with the best resources. But to me CalArts is the closest to where I want to study design in the first place. In my humble opinion, they allow more room for experimentation and exploration compared to the other 2 programs you mentioned here (I may be wrong). I don't know much about SVA so I'd better not make any comments.

Congrats on your acceptances! Give CalArts a careful thought. If you have more questions about any one of the programs, I think the faculties will be more than pleased to connect you with their current student like what Lorraine Wild did for me.

@savantarde / I'm kind of unsure if I should share this info with you but if you're going to SAIC, I should probably let you know this just for your own notes. Lorraine Wild told me she didn't think it's a good program, they had some applicants from SAIC's post-bac program in the past few years and she said the faculty at CalArts was under impressed with their work. A post-bac program is supposed to prep students for MFA applications and if what she said is true, there may be something wrong with SAIC's program. You can also notice that they have minimal connections, shares minimal resources with other good programs like MICA, Yale, RISD and CalArts, and graphic design community isn't a big one to be honest.

  6. Did you get an email or snail mail for Yale GD. I am sitting in SF waiting for painting and wondering if I should be looking soon.

The head of the department sent me an email notifying me of my acceptance the same day I interviewed. It seems like they act and decide with impressive efficiency.

    Best of luck to you!

  7. Shelia emailed me and told me they had mailed something out on Monday. I'm in the 2 year.

I'm kind of stoked because I met some great folks in the application process, and they are coming too!

I heard that the 3 year was much more competitive.

    WOW! Congratulations!!! That's amazing!

I have just finished interviewing with the faculty and students just now. The most intense of all my interviews. I applied to the 3 years program but was changed to 2 years track.

I also heard that 3 years are quite competitive. 20ish people are scheduled for interviews for relatively fewer spots.

Hopefully I can hear from Sheila soon.

  8. Awesome man!! Yeah, RISD and YALE are incredible programs. If you go to RISD, and I go to MICA, we should exchange emails and work on something together sometime! I mean, you're from Taipei right? And I bet you're crazy talented. I'm an international student too (from Mexico). I think we could make some awesome multicultural stuff! :)

That's sounds cool! Does your work reflect your cultural background often? Mine seldom, but I definitely think that'll be one interesting path to venture.

I just finished my longest interview ever with Yale. Very intense. Lots of conceptual questions. But finally I'm through with all schools. Phew~~

  9. Thanks Jestem! :)

I'm leaning towards MICA, it has been my top choice for about a month now - I just love the school installations and am a big fan of Ellen Lupton's and Jennifer Cole Phillips' (plus their funding offer is nice lol).

The only thing that might persuade me otherwise would be good news from RISD.

By the way, congrats on getting into so many awesome schools!

    Which are you leaning towards?

I was interviewed by Jennifer, didn't get to speak with Ellen though, but the experience was a very pleasant one. I was very impressed by the school installations too, probably the best out of the line-up. And yes, the funding is just toooo tempting!!! Besides, the prospect of where the program is heading to is also very exciting. I can totally tell these two women are doing a lot to try to provide the program with the best resources.

But at this moment, I think I'm leaning towards RISD more. Though the funding they provide isn't as competitive as MICA's and comes only partly in tuition remission, I still feel it's the place closest to where I want to study design in the first place. The only thing that would top a RISD admission would be a Yale admission. I've been watching Yale GD MFA program since day one. Best of luck to us both!

  10. Congrats to all of those getting into such awesome programs!!!

Good luck to all those still waiting!

I just received an acceptance offer from SVA (GD MFA)! :) which puts my standings at:

    Admitted:

    SAIC

    SVA

    MICA

    Rejected

    YALE

    MCAD

    VCU

    Waiting on:

    Cranbrook

    RISD

Awesome!!! Congratulations! Which one are you leaning to so far?

  11. Thanks, Ruth! I'm head over heals for the program at Cranbrook, so of course its the only school i've applied to that hasn't released decisions yet. The wait is KILLING me! so anxious..

I saw that you're in GD too... which schools are you interested in?

    Congrats on your acceptance!

I was just thinking to myself today why people here don't seem to be very crazy about Cranbrook? I mean it's rated as one of the top art schools in the US. I didn't apply because I don't think I am ready for Cranbrook's no-course, self-directing learning/teaching method although I do enjoy a great level of freedom. Otherwise, it's an excellent school with excellent 2D program.

Good luck to you with Cranbrook!

  12. Group interviews for ITP were suggested, but not mandatory- and they didn't specifically ask individuals to interview, it was a "rsvp if you can" thing. Congrats! Is it your top choice? If so, I'll see you there :)

    CONGRATULATIONS!!!

This is a tough choice. ITP gives me 15,000 scholarship. RISD's funding information won't come out until next week. I'm hoping their decision will make my decision easier....

  13. MICA Graphic Design received 250 applications and admits 12.

RISD GD received 350 applications in total and admits 7 into 2 yr program.

Yale GD 3yr program received 120 applications and admits 6. I don't know about the situation for 2yr program at Yale but I assume it's not far from RISD's stats.

BTW, CCA said in an e-mail that they received a record number of applications this year!

  14. CONGRATS JESTEM!!! Sounds like that's your pick! Wonderful!

ps re contacting cal arts: yes I emailed Taryn and just wrote very politely, "hello my name is grad_wannabe, I interviewed with so-n-so on such-n-such date. Do you know when admissions decisions will be available? thank you!"

pps Jestem you hear back from ITP yet? I'm on the verge of emailing them...

    Thank you!

Well, my last interview is with Yale in late March. If I get in both, I'll decide between the two. Both are my number one choices.

Still nothing from NYU ITP, I think it's not going well for me. I haven't even got an interview! But, hey! You've already got in MIT! It's gotta be your pick, right?
