    Hi All,

I am a bit nervous about my application as I will have only worked in a chem lab and I want to go into Biochemistry or Biological sciences. I'm not sure if this will be a disadvantage for my application. I am planning on taking my GREs again in October, so hopefully that should go up.

Undergrad Institution: Marymount University (small lib arts private school)
    Major(s): Biochemistry (Honors Program)
    GPA in Major: 3.7
    Overall GPA: 3.6
Type of Student:  Domestic, female, minority (asian)

    GRE Scores (revised/old version):
    Q: 158
    V: 152
    W: 4

Awards/Honors/Recognitions: Biochemistry Academic Excellence, 2016, Deans List 7/8 semesters

Pertinent Activities or Jobs: Research assistant for a clinical research institute and my Honors thesis was based on Bioethics.

Any Miscellaneous Accomplishments that Might Help: Currently working in a government analytical chemistry lab for a year now and I am working on a project that will possibly published. Will get recommendation from supervisor, previous supervisor, and previous professor.

    Applying to Where:
    Indiana University (Indianapolis)

    UC Davis (top 3)

NYU (top 3 / would like to go here and do their Global PhD)

    University of Florida

    Uni of Oregon

Schools I am not sure about:

    University of Southern California

    Wakeforest

    UC San Diego

    Emory

Are there any other schools I should be looking into with my stats and experience? Any feedback for the schools listed? If anyone knows anything about the two different program Indiana offers, in Bloomington and Indianapolis, can you please explain the major differences with the programs? Also, any additional feedback is welcome. Thanks!

    hey....how did it go?

It depends completely on your interests - I don't think I've heard much about U Alberta but that doesn't mean much. if you look at their faculty page and can easily pick out several PI's whose work appeals to you and who seem to be publishing somewhat regularly, it could definitely be a good choice. You can also see if you can email some current graduate students there and ask what their experience in the program has been like.

hmm...done that. I have had conversation with the possible PI that i want to work with. He is also interested in me joining his lab. He was all about you should work hard and forget about weekends.. ;P... i just wanted to know the impact of Neuroscience in University of Alberta.

I also have offer from Louisiana state Uni.....dont know what to do...

    Anyways thanks

yeah, honestly with your mindset, I think the best action would be not to even think of her. Assume she will do absolutely nothing, and apply and plan with that mindset.

yeah man i run 2 polyclinic in my country, i wanted to work in Neurodegenerative diseases, I donot think i will apply if she is not taking me to her lab. i think  I will ask her the question boldly.

As people have stated before, a PI will RARELY commit to taking you to their lab via email as an applicant. She is simply encouraging you to apply, doesn't mean anything else. In fact, there are many examples on previous admission cycles here of people that were told to apply by a PI and ultimately get rejected.

    shit man.....shit.....:(

  5. The prof from LSU replied and told me to send her my motivation letter, she said she will have a look at it. After that, she has sent me the edited sop. She is all excited for me to apply.

Does that mean she has accepted me to her lab???

Or should i ask her boldly, coz the 100$ form my hard earned money......im confused

It is somewhere between rare and not appropriate for a professor to tell you they would accept you as a grad student before you've applied to the program.

It's one of the reasons I discourage people from directly asking this question- you almost never get a good response, and you put pressure on someone to sidestep the application system at the same time.

Yeah!! but at the time of interview, they ask us have you identified and talked to your potential supervisor????....

    Also, a response like,

"Dear X, I encourage you to apply to our program at the end of the year"

basically means nothing if you didn't already know the person ahead of time. It's just a standard polite response that professors use. I would just follow up with another polite response: "Thank you, Prof Y, I will be submitting my application this year." or you can just ignore the email.

haha!! yeah..finally he replied back again and told me he encourages me to apply but he cannot confirm he will pick me as a grad student.....that means a waste of 100$ for me.....

and another polite respnse has been sent by me.....Thankyou for your time :P

  7. The PI i emailed replied me to ask about the courses detail i did in my BSc and MSc, after emaling him all the detail ....he replied back as Dear, I encourage you to apply till the end of the year, nothing else???

i don't know what this mean......he has not told me any thing regarding he have any opportunities in his lab??

Should i email him back asking will he take me to his lab or accept me as a grad student??

    need opinions...thanks :)

We have filed for a patent and our project is nearly complete.

I have interned in a Microbiology laboratory at Columbia Asia Referral Hospital for 2 months during my summer break.

I am currently working on biomarker identification for different cancers. I have identified more than 10 potential molecules for triple negative breast cancer and lung squamous carcinoma. I will be validating this in patient samples at an mRNA and protein level.
