I was recently accepted as a Masters International student at Antioch University New England. I am starting to have second thoughts about that, though. These are my options:
1. Masters International - do a year of my masters, ship off to peace corps for two years of service (gives me 9-12 free credits and an $8,000 bonus when I get back) then do the last year of my Masters/my thesis.
2. Do 2 years of my masters all at once. Pay more upfront, but I get 3 more electives to gain skills, I graduate with my cohort, and I do 2 internships. THEN do 2 years of peace corps service; miss out on the free credits but still get the $8k.
Thoughts?

Sweet! What did you do in the peace corps?

I am interested in ecology and evolution, ornithology, conservation, biogeography, and biological statistics. I want to work on becoming fluent in a second language besides my native English. I have some experience in French already, but is German a better language to know for biology/ecology? Or some other language?

Otherss, that is very interesting and insightful, thank you! I would love to hear more about what it was like working on a wildlife refuge, if you don't mind sharing. Also, where are you in school right now? It sounds like we have some common interests.

Do you have any idea what kind of jobs specifically I would be looking for? Would it be as narrow as 'GIS technician' or would it be useful if I wanted to try to get a federal job as a biologist?

Hi there, not sure why you haven't gotten a reply yet. Do your FAFSA ASAP. You don't need to look up tuition estimates, you just put in your income/tax information and the schools you are applying to. If you missed the scholarship deadline but still want to apply, contact the school post-haste and tell them you would like to be considered for scholarships this year if possible.

I'm about to move to Keene, and I have definitely one, possibly two roommates. Anyone have experience in Keene? Anyone have success here without a car?

Hey all,
I am about to embark on a masters in Conservation Biology at Antioch University New England. I am interested in raptor conservation, R, GIS, and bigger ES issues like global change. I was wondering if anyone is in these fields and has any thoughts on the job market as it stands. I am very adaptable and have done a wide range of work, from science to communications to writing to the arts, so I can teach myself what I need to gain almost any skills.
GIS, Python, and R are all particularly interesting. I know there's always teaching science, but I was wondering if anyone had experience with environmental science/biology/modeling stuff or had advice on fields, skills, or even organizations to focus on.
PEACE CORPS - Masters International or post-grad?

My concerns are that if I do Masters International program, instead of getting my Masters and THEN doing the Peace corps, 1. I wouldn't have the 2 internships I'd have otherwise, 2. I would get one less elective, and 3. I wouldn't graduate with my cohort.
If I DO the Masters International bit, I get 4 electives. If I don't, I get 5 electives. There are already more electives I want to take than fit into my program. These are the ones I am interested in:
Vertebrate Ecology - Ornithology
GIS
Proposal Writing and Project Management
Qualitative and Quantitative Research Design Techniques
Comparative Ecological Analysis
Science Teaching Methods
Avian Nesting Ecology
Environmental Law
Natural Resource Inventory - Wildlife
Wildlife and Forest Management
