  1. I never got an official letter either and my host is waiting for it so I can signup for  campus housing.  But I get an email from the Tokyo office asking for passport info.....

I accepted the offer today. Are we supposed to receive any confirmation email from Elena?

I received notification from her stating the acceptance was noted.

EDIT: It took a couple of days to hear back though.

Has anyone else besides @bhub received forms about making travel plans? I was in the first round of people that received a tentative acceptance e-mail. Wondering if I should send them an e-mail, or work on my patience?

I am in the Japan group and they just sent notification asking for passport info and that they're sending our info to JSPS.  There was a time limit on the travel plan email, I would contact them since the pre-departure meeting is coming up.  With tickets going up...I got the impression from the travel agent that they have a limit on how much they can spend.

  4. They are sending out forms for us to make travel plans.  Maybe they waited to announce the 2nd round until they sent travel plans to the first round of people.

btw my field is environmental science and toxicology.

  5. Yeah, I replied the first time to only Elena and got an automated response that she wasn't going to be back in the office until today.

Then I realized it wasn't cc'd to the other two people, so I resent it but now my message is in the trimmed content part of the email in google.  So I'm slightly unsure if they'll notice my acceptance.

I will have to decline the stipend because of my fellowship.  In the Japan handbook, it suggests that the $5k is typically declined when people already have other sources of NSF funds.

  6. I'm checking this thread everyday to see if anyone heard back! Lol  I was hoping to hear back soon, my guess is probably next week.  I'd hate to submit an IACUC and find out the next day I didn't even get the award....

  7. I also applied for Japan, my concentration is aquatic ecology/toxicology and was also sent for peer review on 1/5/16.  But in December when I looked at the proposal status it said 'External Review began on 1/5/16'.

  8. When I applied for EPA STAR 2013, I got a decline packet in the mail in Mayor June-ish. ....Sometime soon after receiving acceptance of the NSF GRFP.  In the packet I got my application scores/reviewer notes.  It's hard to tell how they decide.  I got the highest score from all reviewers but one noted I didn't have any publications during my undergrad.  My mentor who has been a reviewer for this program said publications for undergrads isn't a reason to decline an application.  Anyways, the point is many people submit good applications and get excellent scores but still get declined.

Though I should also note the EPA STAR 2013 was due in November and many started out award notifications near the end of summer and throughout the fall..I think based on funding categories.  But the EPA STAR 2015 was due in May? and you were supposed to know before Fall semesters?  I was told by a reviewer that the format of selecting awardees is different and not to bother until the next cycle.  I think in general this is bad if you're relying on funding to get into grad school.

I was supposed to hear back by now from the EPA about a totally separate opportunity.  I've been told by people who work at the EPA and professors involved in decision making that they are generally slow with everything because of funding cuts.
