I'm so very relieved to say that after two years of applications, I now have multiple offers to English PhD programs (Creative Dissertation). I was accepted at Texas Tech today. I am waiting to hear from four more schools, and the final word on my waitlist spot at USC. Sometimes it is about timing and fit and the stars aligning, but if you should find yourself in the universal rejection camp, please don't lose hope.

    2 acceptances/ 1 waitlist/ 2 rejections/ 4 more I'm waiting to hear from

    Congratulations on your acceptances:-)

And thanks for sharing such a heart-warming message!

Sorry to hear you did not get funding.

There are actually a couple posts in the results section from people who did receive half funding for the M.A. in MES at UChicago. Overall, Chicago is known for being fairly generous with funding compared to other schools. And it's even more amazing because UChicago is usually considered number one in the world for Middle Eastern Studies. I hope you receive some good offers elsewhere, Mojdeh. Good luck.

    Hi David:-)

Thank you for your kind wishes. The E-mail I received just as @ibnbattuta has kindly explained does mention the possibility of funding for the second year. It's still very nice to have heard back from them, but given the amount of student loans I currently have from my undergrad, I think it would be wiser to complete an MA and apply again for the PhD with a (hopefully!) stronger application. Are you currently studying at UChicago?

UChicago has sent out admissions offers for the M.A. in Middle Eastern Studies. Posted in the results section.

    hey:-)

I did receive an offer after my application was sent to them (I had originally applied to the PhD), but they're not funded. The first year for the MA is almost always unfunded unfortunately.

In December actually, which in hindsight, may not have been the best idea given that my waiting time is that much prolonged.

With English at least, I have noticed too many acceptances on the Results Board, and now think it is a goner for me. But hey, good luck to you!

Good luck to you, too. It's still early to say. Don't lose hope:-)

I have actually applied to the English program at U of T. But yes, still waiting under the large looming shadow of the increasingly more depressing "Under Review".

    Hi there:-)

Oh, I know what you mean. The waitings is becoming really unbearable. I received an E-mail from the comp-lit department that said the decision will be 'mailed to me', which does not do much to calm my nerves:-D

When did you complete your application and submit your supplementary documents?

Hey all, I got accepted to the PhD program at UCLA (NELC - Arabic). I'm really grateful for this as this was one of my top choices. Does anyone else here plan on going to UCLA?

    Congratulations!

That's wonderful! It must be a relief to receive an admission from your top choice:-)

I had applied to UCLA as well, but have not heard anything. Did you hear from them today?

Re Chicago, in which area did you apply?   And are all of the other programs on the ancient side, or are there modern ones thrown in?

My area is mostly Classical. I'm interested in Classical Persian Literature. I've applied to some Near Eastern programs and some Comparative Literature programs.

So far, no acceptances to the Phds as I heard from UChicago last week and Berkeley today. An acceptance would be really nice right about now:)

Given the above explanation for the quotas of the admits and the fact that there are usually no more than 2 professors in the department who are first literary types and focused on Persian lit, the rest of my American applications don't look very bright, either.

But kudos really:-) Those are great schools. Especially Chicago!

I was accepted to the PhD program at Chicago for NELC, studying either Hebrew Bible and the ancient Near East or NW Semitics.  Has anyone else here been accepted to Chicago, or to any programs in ancient Near Eastern Studies?

    Congratulations!

That's wonderful. What other programs are you waiting to hear from?

I have applied to Berkeley, UCLA, Chicago, and Columbia. So far, only heard back from Chicago (rejected from the PhD).

People posted about Berkeley, Chicago and Cornell. I think then I am receiving the rejection letter soon. When did you receive it?

Oh, I hadn't seen anything from Berkeley in the results page.

But don't despair, maybe yours will be good news:)

I received an E-mail today at around 5:30 EST. So, I guess 4:30 Chicago time.

Berkeley, Chicago, Cornell. Inuit checked the results and a couple have posted that they got admitted! Do you think they send the admitted first and then the rejected? ?

    Hey:-)

I just received my first rejection from Chicago today.

I'm not quite sure, but I think the Chicago results should be out shortly depending on the areas of research (since I got a personalised E-mail).

What universities have posted admissions? I also have applied to Berkeley, but not heard anything yet.

  11. Hello!

I have applied to a number of Near/Middle Eastern Studies Programs (sometimes in conjunction with the departments of Comparative Literature) and I still haven't heard anything either. Which universities are you waiting to hear from??
