  1. haha

Yes, sorry it is just an american thing but soon they will get rid of mail on sat here too.. too costly.

I am leaving on sunday so I am hoping it is in the mail before on sat or earlier. I keep refreshing the page to see if anybody else has heard anything.

    You aren't alone:

50 User(s) are reading this topic

  2. I think perhaps it might be better to let the SSHRC staff get the letters out... It does sound like they will go out this week, and that some of us will start to get letters by the end of the week. So my inclination is not to call...

IMO, someone who is registered should call and post. If they don't, then some of the many lurkers on this thread will call and not post.

  3. Call me optimistic, but I have some reservations about those two contrasting timelines you have posted. I much prefer hold on to the "start of May" option, and keep checking my mail anxiously every day until SSHRC send my mail...

    I'm hoping for that

  4. I was told that:

    1) The secure server isn't working and schools won't find out early.

    2) Results will most probably be mailed late April, possibly early May.

  5. Here's a financial question I can't seem to answer for myself. I have about $25,000 in student loans from my undergraduate years. I'm currently in a Ph.D. program (1st year), and so the 25k are deferred until I graduate and I don't pay any interest until then. Oh, I went to the U.S. for my undergrad (so, US$), but now am in Canada. I'm wondering if I should start paying (some of) the loans back now (like, a few hundred a month), with the US$ = CA$ (pretty much), or should I wait until I graduate, save money (and accrue interest, whether in stocks or something less risky like a high interest savings account or deposit), and then pay it off? Note that, however, in 4 years time, the dollar disparity might go back down to .70 US = $1 CA or so, making any savings in the interim negligible. What would you suggest?

    Pay them off now.

  6. As far as I understand you can downgrade a CGS won in the regular competition. The one you can't downgrade is the "business related" CGS, since that was part of economic stimulus spending and they wanted to keep it in Canada (I think I may strain my eyes from all the rolling).

Do you know anyone who wasn't allowed to downgrade a regular CGS? That just sounds crazy to me!

haha, yes, that would be terrible wouldn't it?

I applied to a business discipline - but through the regular process - and i think i have a strong application. What i'm worried about is that they will see business, and give me a must-stay-in-canada busines SSHRC rather than a regular SSHRC. Make sense? Or am I just misunderstanding the process.

  7. Why has life been stuck in the slow lane on this forum? I promise to limit my F5ing to once every 30 mins if they'll let us back onto TM. Can we settle on a cooperative solution so that first half of alphabet F5 on the hour and the other half on the half hour (or smaller subsets in shorter intervals if this reduces Pr(crash)), or are we stuck in the PD "bad" outcome?

That would never work. Nash equilibrium (or perhaps rational addiction is a better model.)

  8. I have a funded offer from a good school and I'm going to flyout. Lucky me, I'm also waitlisted at a better program and expect an offer from another good program.

How explicit should I be about my plans?

What do I say if they explicitly ask what other schools I've heard from?

    >> What other schools are you considering?

"I have a couple of very interesting offers I'm considering at this point, "

    >> So what schools are those?"

"A couple of top schools such as your program."

Should I be evasive or name the schools?

  9. Does anyone know how to ensure that I don't get a CGS? I have only applied to US schools, so getting a CGS would sort of suck (haha). They are still not letting people downgrade, right?

I'm working on getting them back up; the hard drive failed, and we're working to get the data off of that drive. What a drag.

Hi, Paula. Thanks for the support. I've got the techs working on it, but from what they've told me, it's not looking good.
