Bowling Green is a small town, so there isn't much to it.

It's all pretty safe, especially near campus/downtown, but if you're trying to get away from the Undergrads there really isn't any place to go. Everything around campus and downtown is taken over by undergrads, as are the student complexes (falcon's point, edge, copper beach). If you really want to avoid them, you will have to live in Perrysburg and commute (it's about 10 minutes). The next bet would probably be stuff beyond downtown, near the Kroger on Main/Poe.

Unfortunately none of those places are walking distance. Anything within walking distance of the university will have a strong undergrad presence, but hopefully next year will be more bearable with the fraternities moving back onto campus.

Call one of the management companies, Mecca, etc. They can help.

I appreciate your response, it helps a lot :)

Hi! I can't really speak much for the PhD program, but I can speak for housing since I did my undergrad at BGSU. Bowling Green is totally a college town and renting a house isn't too hard (or it wasn't when I went there. Things can always change, of course.) On BGSU's website they have a list of rental places for those that don't want to live in the dorms, and most of them are within walking distance of campus/food/nightlife. You won't hate yourself if you don't have a car, but sometimes the weather in northwest Ohio leaves a lot to be desired, so keep that in mind when looking for a place. You can do some research on your own; in my experience living on/around campus, I never felt particularly unsafe walking any distance to/from campus at night.

BGSU is bordered by a field, so all of the apartments, rentable houses are on one side of campus. Enclave/Enclave II was roomshare in apartments and was kind of terrible, IMO, but I had terrible roommates and we had ants because of said terrible roommates. I later rented from John Newlove and it was amazing - if it's a house you're looking for, this is your best bet as they can help you rent one of the houses on the streets close to campus, that aren't in the townhome/condo/apartment complexes.

Hope that helps a little bit!

It helps a lot my friend! Thank you for your response. I'm going to check John Newlove as soon as possible.

BTW, are you aware of neighborhoods hosting undergrads? I really can't bear partying noises that much, so I want to be far away from those places.

  3. So, finally I committed to BGSU (PhD in Theatre). Now, all I have to do is to rent a one bedroom house.

I've reviewed some websites and found out some options. But, thing is, I'm unfamiliar with the neighborhoods. So, I'd appreciate it if you suggest me some safe neighborhoods which are far away from undergraduate territories (ergo, constant partying!). Also, it would be great if your suggestions would be in the walking distance of university.

    Thank you in advance.

Hi, all!  It's been a long admissions season, and I'm eager to hear where everyone is going.

I ended up with 2a/2w/2r/1?.  I was offered a tuition scholarship and an assistantship at Bowling Green, and a similar funding package at Texas Tech.  I was waitlisted at Minnesota and Pittsburgh - both of which were very kind and encouraging.  I was rejected pretty early on by UT and Missouri.  I had a brief but friendly email from Irvine, but haven't heard anything since.

After some serious evaluation, I decided to take the offer at BGSU.  I'm really excited about the way they combine scholarship and practice, about the faculty, and about the overall structure of the program.

Hoping everyone has happy news to share!

Congrats buddy! I've also accepted BGSU offer (the same deal as yours). I'm going to send you a message to know each other more. How exciting!

I heard from Harvey Young a couple of days ago. I was accepted into the IPTD at northwestern (pending approval of the dean.  I hope you got similar good news!

Finally heard back from Columbia--rejected. Was also recently rejected from Brown after interviewing with them.

So even though I am still waiting to hear back from NYU, I am very happy with the options that I have: Berkeley, Minnesota, Tufts, and Northwestern. If anybody has any info they want to share about these programs id love to read it.

Congratulations @skw0007! And yes, I also received the call from Harvey Young to say I'd got in!

I will almost certainly be attending Northwestern since it was my top choice for theatre. We may yet be Evanston drama buddies! I'd love to pm about research etc if you decide NU is the place for you.

Congratulations to both of you! Northwestern was my dream program and I couldn't get in; I'm extremely happy for you fellas :)
BTW skw0007 , I think if your research interests are rooted in performance studies (especially non-art performance studies) Berkeley is the perfect place; but, if you (like me) prefer a balance between theatre studies and performance studies, I believe no place is more suited than Northwestern. The great thing about NW-IPIT program is the fact that it is based in Communication school; so, you literary have many possibilities in other programs (especially, well, PS program!).

I really wished to have a chance to work with Dr. Davis, Dr. Young and also, Dr. Chambers-Letson (he's in PS department). You're now the subject of many people's jealousy! You simply rock :)
Once again, congrats to you both friends; I hope our paths can cross one day. :)

P.S: Finally, I committed to BGSU and accepted their offer; I did a thorough research and I'm confident now it's a great place for PhD. It's not a premium or Ivy League, but they are very well-known and recognized. So, yeah, good luck all of us!

Welcome, BipsyBot77!  2 acceptances - that's great!  Sorry to hear about Brown though.

mrbabaee - how did your interview go?  I just heard I have a Skype interview with UCSB tomorrow, and I'm curious as well about what kind of questions I'll be asked.

To be honest, I think I gave the most awful interview ever!!! I was in lots of pressure (I had a real bad day) and made a big mistake: wrote down my answers (to probable questions)!!! Although I was completely right about the questions, the whole interview got an awkward taste (at least, for me). They asked two questions:

    1. Tell us a little bit about yourself and research interests.

    2. Why did you choose our university?

Then, they let me to ask any questions in regard to the program, the university and the city. They continued by elaborating on funding details.

One thing just kept my heart warm during the event and that was how calm and kind my interviewers were; they understood my stress and made some jokes to comfort me. They were completely honest in their answers and treated me like I'm already their student.

So, to sum up: Think on your answers, but not too much. Just try to have a friendly chat and know that even for being considered for an interview, it puts you on the top of dozens of applicants. You are halfway there buddy and I wish you the greatest interview ever! :)

BTW fellas, can anyone help me in regard to my choice between BGSU and Indiana? Although, I don't think I can get an offer from Indiana, but given the odds, it's better to have a comparison beforehand. I know that the program in Indiana is rooted in history and literature (two things that I like the least!!!), while BGSU is more performance theory-related (which I dig the most!). On the other hand, Indiana is (greatly) more recognized university (but I couldn't find any review in regard to their theatre program).

I've found this website useful for its ranking in theatre and performance studies:

    http://www.phds.org/rankings/theater

It has given BGSU a quiet decent rank (higher than Tufts, CUNY The Graduate Center, Georgia, and even Minnesota). But, since I'm not from the states, I cannot attest to its precision. So, yeah, I appreciate it if anybody can shed a light on my dilemma!

Cheers (and sorry for the long post).

    Hey,

I had a 30 min Skype interview for a PhD program a few days ago (also my first experience of this nature). They asked why I had chosen to apply to their program, and also asked if I had any questions (I had like 5 prepared in advance). They also asked about my research interests, currently and in the future -- but this shouldn't have to be something you need to study in advance for an interview. :) It was slightly awkward because that's the nature of the beast, but the conversation carried itself. If I were you I'd simply spend a few minutes on the school site reminding myself why I'd decided to apply there (small/large department size? really awesome POI(s)? resources? location?) and don't stress about it a ton.

Oh, perfect pal. This is so enlightening!

There are a lot of good threads on this over in the Interview Section of the Application Forum. A lot of help over there from actual grad students... not just lame applicants like us (just kidding everybody).

Most of the time, a grad interview is more of a semi-formal process to get to know your personality and whether you as a person are as good as you seem on paper. You stats and research could be great.... but you could also be a sociopath. Interviews help figure that out. I've heard that it's a good idea to read some abstracts/conclusions of professors that will be there, to have an idea of what people do.

Also, just have an "elevator pitch". A good 30 second- minute long explanation of what you want to research/ why you want to go to grad school. (Not all robot like saying the same thing over and over.... just a general idea).

Thank you dear sjoh197 for your references. I'm going to check out those naughty sections! ;)

I also appreciate your other suggestions.

  8. Hello fellas.

Not quite whining, but rather a stupid question! I didn't know where I should ask this, therefore in line with my frustration, I just leave it here:

I've been offered an interview for PhD and I don't frigging know what they want to ask and talk about. This is my first ever interview and I'm completely blind. Should I concentrate on my statement?! Should I prepare something?! Should I study something?!!!

    Any help is much appreciated.

  9. Congratulations skw0007 for those wonderful programs!

Today, I got an email from Indiana University- Bloomington, arranging a SKYPE interview on Friday. Thing is, this is the first time ever that I've been asked for an interview and I don't have the slightest clue what they want to talk about! Can I ask you friends who have experience in interviews to enlighten me in this regard? What are the questions? Should I be prepared for something in particular beforehand?

    My pleasure! :)

I should also clarify, by "I'm not going there" I mean "I'm not attending there currently". I reread that and it sounded like I didn't want to go there. Oops!

Oh, I understand. Thank you for the clarification :)

I'm not really familiar with the program at BGSU. If you're worried about budgeting, you might want to try to see just generally what apartments run there. I've been casually looking around the places I've applied on sites like zillow or craiglist to get a feel, which might be helpful to ease your nerves, and determine whether it's a viable option or not.

I'm curious, when did you hear back from Brown?

Sorry I couldn't be of more help with BGSU!

Thank you for the hint friend!

In regard to your question about Brown, I've got the unofficial word. I was talking with Dr. Rebecca Schneider about an article and she was kind enough to mention the committee's decision. But she said it's going to be quiet a while until the official results get public. I knew that Brown is extremely competitive, but it hurt a lot to hear the news! What I (ever) look in theatre and performance studies is heavily related to Dr. Schneider's concentration and I was devastated to know that I missed the chance to study under her supervision.

  12. I was stupid enough to start another topic without realizing that this topic here is exactly the same!

I'm going to delete that topic, but first, let me just copy my post here:

"have applied for these: Northwestern (ITT), Brown, CUNY The Graduate Center, Maryland-College Park, Indiana-Bloomington, Georgia (UGA), BGSU.

So far, I've been rejected from NW and Brown and been accepted in BGSU. They have offered me a PhD level assistantship which secures 14K for 9 months. Though, I have to deduct the the general fee (which I don't know for now how much it would be). Moreover, they have mentioned that there is a way to waive the non-resident fee. One more thing, I think (though not sure) that they don't offer any health insurance. I've heard that it's a cheap city and you can live off by that money for 9 months, but the summer gap worries me. I'd deeply appreciate any info on this university and city (especially in regard to its financial offer)."

So, what do you think of about BGSU? Can anyone help me with the program's reputation and robustness? What about the city?

Congrats talkingscop and mrbabaee!  I've gotten two rejections and am waiting on 6 more.  I keep telling myself no news is good news, but I'm getting antsy.

    Thank you pal!

I completely understand the situation. It's really tough keep going when you hear a rejection. I was devastated when I heard my two rejections. But, trust me, good news are coming! Just stand tall and try to have a chat with your friends. In fact, I guess no one minds if you want to share your thoughts here. Try it more, it will help :)

I'm not going there, but I've applied and visited for a different program.

As stated before, it's very cheap (by a lot of standards). I was told a two bedroom apartment was in the 600-700 range. If you were frugal, I definitely think 14,000 would suffice, comfortable even, perhaps. And the indoor spaces of the campus are actually quiet lovely. I could easily see myself spending an entire day inside of the union. The union felt like an airport (e.g., you'd rarely have to leave the building).

Also, their arts center is gorgeous. It's difficult to grasp the scale of that building. If you look real close you can see a fairly large entry door or two.Wolfe-Center-Bowling-Green-University.jp

I can't really say much else, to be honest. My visit was only a few days, and I was busy for all of it. Hopefully someone else can chime in.

Thank you my dear friend! I really appreciate your comments.

  15. Hello friends.

Can anyone please give me some updated info about the city? I really like small towns and gonna spend most of my time on the campus (BGSU). Also, details on housing are much appreciated.

I'm 28 and been accepted in Theatre program (PhD). They have offered me an assistantship which ensures 14,000 $ for 9 months. Do you think I can live there by this money? How is the art atmosphere there?

    Thank you in advance.

  16. Hey guys, so glad I found this topic!

I've been offered an admission from BGSU for PhD. I believe it's a pretty decent department, but, since I live outside of USA, I'd appreciate it if anyone could give me some info in regard to their reputation and robustness.

BTW, I'm still waiting for these: CUNY The Graduate Center, Maryland-College Park, Indiana-Bloomington, Georgia (UGA). I had applied for Northwestern (ITT), but got rejected. Congrats to talkingscop; rock on pal :)
