Has anyone ever responded to a rejection email to clarify "concerns" about your application and gotten a different answer?

Toronto Schools
Should I email the schools , does anyone have any success with getting a response?
I have not heard from 3/4 schools yet, I am getting worried that I may not get in anywhere!
Checking the portals daily for an update .... I have checked the feed on the acceptances so far and some have heard back already!
I have confirmation emails to state my applications were received in January. The portals today say 'no decision yet' or 'under review'
Ahhhhh what are everyones thoughts on this?!So Far:
March 14 I was rejected from Concordia For Masters in Art History
Waiting to hear back from:
Ryerson University for Film and photography Preservation and Collections Management, Masters
York University Art History Masters
University of Toronto For MVS CuratorialI was waiting to hear from a UofT (app was due December 15) PhD program and literally just got an email from the assistant director of the program yesterday, pretty sure because I emailed my person of interest. Couldn't hurt to email/call?

Can you afford (not "afford with loans" or "afford with certain spending restraints" but "afford," full stop) to pay a year's full-freight tuition in exchange for a fairly small chance of getting to move into the program officially? If yes, then I suppose there are worse things you could be doing. There are almost certainly a lot of better things you could be doing, though.
Good thing I won't have to because I got in to my first choice program after all! Hurrah.

Is it a bad idea to enroll as a special student for a year at my top choice institution if I'm rejected?

If it helps, I'm currently on 2/5 - 2 rejections, 3 I've not heard back from yet. One of the rejections was my second choice, one was my last choice. I'm starting to wish I'd applied to the MA program at my first choice institution too :/
Is it worth taking a fully funded PhD offer at a low ranked university?

Have two MAs, and have been rejected because of "fit" (despite having interviews) from all top choice American PhD programs (in the Humanities)... am waiting to hear back from two programs, have one interview this week. Both are in the UK, one is a fully funded scholarship, but the university is fairly low ranked. One is fairly highly ranked but I applied late and missed the normal international funding scheme, so not sure how that one may work.
If I'm offered the scholarship, is it worth taking just so that I'm *in* a PhD program, or should I try to do an MPhil or MLitt at the second university (if there's no funding for the PhD) and re-apply in time to receive funding for the PhD? I want to teach, I want to contribute to my field, and I don't want my career prospects to falter. The department at the lower ranked university itself is totally fine, but the institution is a relative no-name, and I don't see their graduates making any progress in my field.
This is my fourth time applying to programs, and I'm exhausted, frustrated, and don't really know what to do.
