  1. I'm just starting in the fall too for a CS PhD. I talked to some of the current grad students when I visited and heard there wasn't a huge difference between Weyburn and Hilgard. There seemed to be a more active social scene at Weyburn, if that's your thing, but that could also have been some sample bias. Another thing to think about is location. Hilgard is a bit closer to campus. It's also slightly closer to TJ's, Ralph's, and Target. Weyburn is closer to KREC the graduate student gym. Then, note that Hilgard is all studios. Weyburn has some studios, but is mostly 2 people per apartment. Studios are more expensive, and for some reason Hilgard studios are more expensive than Weyburn studios (by about $90/mo). The last difference I can think of is parking. I remember reading somewhere on the housing site that Hilgard had fewer parking spaces and so there's usually a waitlist. Parking seems really shitty at either place though, or at any place near campus, for that matter. Weyburn apparently has tandem parking spots which sounds absolutely terrible, but for all I know Hilgard does too. Sorry if you already knew all this stuff. Most of it is on the housing pages but it's spread out and sometimes hidden. It might be good to have the information compiled here for posterity. If anyone else knows anything else, especially if they've lived in either place, bumping metallocene2015's request for info.
  2. Adding a third UCSD.
  3. We should definitely report back to each other on the funding situation. I'll be visiting this Thursday to Saturday. I plan on asking around the other admits when I'm there and seeing if their funding situation is similar.

    Ithaca, NY

I'm not a student at Cornell, but I've been to Ithaca before, and while a car may not be completely necessary, I'd say it would make an independent life a lot easier. Ithaca is not particularly walkable, especially when winter sets in.
  5. I second this. I got ~20k, but with housing as expensive as it is, I'm a little worried about this.
  6. I am! Looking forward to it.
  7. UCSD is March 10th and 11th. UCLA is March 3rd and 4th. UCI is March 4th. UC Berkeley is March 6th and 7th. Stanford seems to be around this time based on the UC Berkeley's visit day website mentioning a bus from Stanford, and I've heard they team up to defray cost. Cornell is March 15th to 18th. Based on info I've seen from Cornell, it seems like CMU might have their visit day around this time because there was talk of coordinating a shuttle. Not sure if this was for CS or ML though. I've heard of admissions after visit day, though, so I wouldn't let this smash your hopes.
