So here's a question to you all: do you prefer waiting for admissions when you don't know when results are coming out, or for the GRFP (for at least the past 24 hours), when you do know when it's coming out?

Waiting when you know! I was overseas during admissions, so I was waking up every hour through the night in a panic to refresh my emails for a month. Narrowing it down is still not much fun, but at least it cuts out some of the horrifying suspense!

Does anyone know anything about how difficult it is to change schools— i.e. to attend a different program than your proposed one (for those of us applying before beginning PhDs)? I notice few people on the results list seem to have switched programs, but I would want to given what I've learned about different programs I'm considering.

(Not to get ahead of myself—I'd have to win first, but it's something I was wondering about...)

I'm going to say it's not an issue on their end at all.

My current mentor applied to work on a project at one school, and after he won got flown out and wooed by another program. He ended up going with the second program, and he says it wasn't a problem with the NSF.

On the other hand it might be slightly awkward if the potential advisor for the project / program you applied with gave you significant help or input, but, even so, you have no true obligation to stay with that program. The GRFP is made to fund the person, not the project, and you can take that funding wherever you want to!

Hope that helps and good luck! :)

  3. That last one was me - I'm an archaeologist who applied under Christian Tryon.

I'm stunned - I gave up completely yesterday after someone said first round offers were already out, and I hadn't been interviewed. But got a generic email with an acceptance link a hour ago. Good luck everyone!
