  1. I can't remember where I originally found this document, but CASLPA surveyed all the programs 6 years ago and put out a review comparing them all side by side. I am having troubles finding a simple way to access it again. I think I found it here http://docplayer.net/1496201-Canadian-association-of-speech-language-pathologists-and-audiologists-university-programs-in-speech-language-pathology-2010.html I am happy to email my pdf if you message me! I only applied to 4 of the 6 English programs. I nixed UBC because of the prereqs and McGill because I couldn't fit a third stats course into my schedule. My top choices were UofT and UofA. But I am from Edmonton and have a great support system here, so I am going to be attending UofA in the fall.
  2. Accepted into UofT! I will be declining my spot. Best of luck to people on the waitlist
  3. I missed a call from them this morning while at a lab meeting! I just listened to the voicemail and it was just a simple congrats from Janet. It's nice that they called... I would have been so awkward on the phone if I had answered though. haha
  4. Accepted into Western! I am planning on going to the UofA, so best of luck to everyone on the waitlist! <3
  5. Oh and Windsor Park is right beside the UofA too!! It's a great neighbourhood. For people looking for cheap options... Residence is definitely more pricey than sharing a house. I pay about $600 all inclusive and I'm a 15 minute walk from Corbett Hall where Rehab Med is located. But it is definitely more work to arrange finding roommates etc. Residence will be about as cheap as renting apartments in and around the UofA.
  6. Hey! I have 2 cats and renting pet friendly in Edmonton can be a bit of challenge. Your best bet is usually with a house and roommates. Many apartments are not pet friendly I found my current house using kijiji. I would say that is the most popular general purpose webpage for selling/renting etc. If a house says not pet friendly, do be shy about asking the landlord. If you explain you have a well trained small dog and that you will be attending graduate school, they can be accommodating. My landlord listed this house as no pets but liked me enough to overlook my feline friends. There are a TON of houses rented by students around the UofA. Key searches to include are McKernan or Belgravia or Garneau or Whyte Ave or LRT... Then google map them for transit. We get a UPass in our tuition, so if you find a place close to the LRT, you are usually pretty good! I would say to start looking at listings in mid-late July. Everything around here rents fast, so if you look any earlier most places will be gone. Hopefully that helps!!
  7. Hey people planning to attend the UofA, I am new to GradCafe, so I don't know if this is the appropriate place to ask this... But I don't personally know anyone who applied to UofA this year. I know a handful of people in their first or second year and one more applying next year... but no one for this year. If there are people out there that want to get to get together before school starts, to grab a drink or whatever, I am totally down. Also, I have lived in Edmonton almost my entire life and did my undergrad at the UofA, so if you are from out of town and want your own personal tour guide/orientation, I am offering that too! I would love to get to know a few classmates before classes start. I find walking into a room full of strangers hella intimidating! Let me know!
  8. Hey! UAlberta has a huge undergrad research initiative for getting undergrads volunteering and working in research. I personally took two courses to get involved in research and then volunteered. For clinical experience I reached out to the Glenrose Rehab Hospital and became a conversation partner volunteer with people with aphasia and CP. I also volunteered with the Institute of Stuttering Treatment and Research (ISTAR) on campus and ended up becoming a Research Assistant with one of their researchers. Another way I got a bit of shadowing was through the school system. I contacted a school in my neighbourhood and they connected me with Inclusive Learning, who manage the placements of SLPs and assistants. I was able to shadow an assistant for 12 hours and an SLP for 3 hours of experience over 2 months. If there are any organizations that you can volunteer with to gain experience with populations that SLPs often work with, there is usually a multidisciplinary team including an SLP! Hope that helps!
  9. I am finally emerging from lurkdom to say I received my UofA acceptance as well! I am a first time applicant but I have to share this success with a handful of people in my life who helped me build my experience and application over the last 2.5 years of my undergrad. The first 2.5 years of my undergrad were very rough and I changed my degree program three times (average B-level indecisive student). I then left university for three years and returned to yet another new program which finally suited me and put me on the road to SLP. I maintained a 4.0 for the last 2.5 years of my degree and my prereq GPA is a 3.85. My GRE was V162, Q159, A4.5. I volunteered/worked in two research labs and volunteered/worked mainly with people who stutter and people with aphasia. My two academic references were my supervisors from my two lab placements, and my clinical reference was the clinician on my main volunteer placement. Because I am not your typical undergrad with a normal 4 year transcript, not to mention less than stellar grades in my first 2.5 years... I was lacking any confidence that I would get in, let alone on my first try. But here goes to show that you can really screw up the first half of your undergrad and pull it all together in the end. Let me know if you have any questions! I am happy to help I wouldn't have been successful on my first try if it weren't for my constant questions to my friends in or graduated from the program.
