Thank you! :) Yes, I was extremely lucky!!

I'm a medievalist - working on French polyphony and linguistics, so I'd probably work with Zazulia (Berkeley) or Boynton (Columbia). At UCLA, I was considering working with Upton!

I'm not sure how the waitlist at UCLA works/if they rank or pick based on people's professor of interest -- also not sure about how many accepted students are going to accept their offer (there was a cohort of 4 accepted), but I'm almost 100% going to turn it down next week if that helps! I just want to give them a name of the place I do end up choosing before I send them my decision.

Best of luck and hope you get in!!

Thank you! I appreciate the info. Yeah I'm not sure how their list works, either, but you and I have different concentrations (I work on 20th/21st century opera), so who knows. I have other acceptances, just waiting for UCLA to decide on me. I'd love to hear where you decide to go!

Thanks!!! I'm currently most seriously considering UC Berkeley, Columbia, and Eastman. I was also accepted to IU Jacobs and UCLA, in case that helps anyone holding out for a waitlist!

Oh that's  you! Wow, congrats. You have a bunch of wonderful options, that's awesome.

What kind of stuff do you work on? What professors of interest at those schools do you have?

I am on the waitlist at UCLA, which is my dream school, so that does help! Thanks for letting me know.

Which program are you talking about? I'm not sure about ethno, theory, or composition, but there are definitely four accepted students to the musicology PhD this year (I know for sure because I am one of them).

Also hi everyone, I've been lurking for a while, but I decided to make an account and comment finally. Best of luck to those still waiting to hear back from places -- I'm still trying to decide where I want to go, but there may be some waitlist movement (musicology PhD) at a few places in the next few weeks ;)

Congratulations on your acceptance to Columbia! What schools are you considering?

@freshavocado Got it (I only asked because I was curious about the MAPH referral which seems to be for non-masters having people).  But yeah the fact is most everyone at those programs has a masters degree, and some have many years of experience beyond that.  What funded masters degrees do you know of actually?  I only know of one (Yale)

University of Louisville has funded programs and the faculty is great

I applied to five programs and have heard back positively from three: UMD, UGA, and CUNY. Still waiting on any kind of notification from Princeton and Harvard but I assume at this point that if they haven’t contacted me for an interview, it is likely a “no.” Anyone else?

Congrats! I am accepted with pretty good funding at UC Davis, waitlisted for funding at CUNY, rejected from Eastman, and still waiting on results from UCLA.

What kind of stuff do you work on?

Hello all looking for fellow people who are applying for musicology graduate programs. Just wondering how everyone's interviews and acceptances or going. The last thread I found on this subject was a few years ago.  I've applied to 6 programs and have received 2 interviews. Waiting for the rest. If you would like to talk about programs or have advise, I would love to hear it!

I applied to four PhD programs in musicology: UCLA, UC Davis, Eastman, and CUNY Graduate Center. Where'd you apply?

Congrats on interviews! Where'd you apply and what kind of stuff do you work on/see yourself working on?

Relatedly: if you haven't already applied to University of Louisville, the program is fantastic and funded. I believe applications are still open.

Has anyone heard anything from NYU musicology?

It feels as if I'm in the last leg of this whole process. My patience is beginning to stale.

Is it you who got waitlisted at Duke?

Yes, I still have several left to hear from, but the first two I heard back from were rejections and they happened right away too. That made me nervous.

    You're doing so great.

First acceptance!! Whew, what a relief. There was definitely a while there where I thought I was doomed to strike out completely.

Congratulations! Mazel mazel.  Surely you have a bunch left to hear from, yeah?

    Hi Unitstructures,

I just stumbled back onto the forums, and I'd be happy to answer any questions you (or anyone else) may have about Duke as I'm currently a musicology student there. Regarding the funding issue, Tray has it right. My cohort is all generously funded, and you have no TA responsibilities your first year, so you're on fellowship; duties start in year two. The amount of funding doesn't change, only the places it comes from.

Also, Paul Berliner is emeritus now, but there is an active search to fill the vacancy. If there's anything else anybody would like to know, please feel free to get in touch.

HoorayforMusic! I wonder when interview notices are going out/when recruitment weekend is.. any intel?

Tray, I applied to Duke because of Paul Berliner. Do you know anything about their funding situation? It doesn't look like an admit means automatic fellowship.

Does anybody know anybody who got an interview invite from Northwestern? Their website says they send them out in early Jan. at the latest.

It looks pretty well-funded! From the Duke Music website:  "There are multiple ways for students to receive or earn support for their graduate studies. At this time all entering students receive financial aid, which normally is maintained for five years (subject to certain conditions, such as satisfactory progress toward the degree). After the first year, graduate assistantships will be substituted for fellowship aid."

So I assume the funding offers vary from student to student, but everyone gets some!  Where did you see contradictory information?

    I can't comment on Northwestern.

Thank you, tray! The interview is with The Graduate Center at the City University of New York.

I also applied to Duke. Did you see that they extended the deadline? That probably means more waiting for us.

Surely, but it also kind of makes me think that they aren't, like, swimming in applications.

Isn't Stony Brook a part of the SUNY system and not the CUNY system? I assume unitstructures means The Graduate Center of CUNY.

Oh, maybe!  I didn't apply to either (and really only researched Stony Brook).  That would have been an embarrassing mistake, though, surely I'd have worked it out before applying.

UNT. So far that's it except for an interview at CUNY. Which three schools did you apply to?

Also, congrats on your good news!  A friend of mine is at Stony Brook and is having a wonderful experience.

Duke, McGill, University of Toronto.  I haven't heard anything from them, yet.

Hey PhDavid! Glad you started this thread. I've submitted to nine PhD programs in musicology. Already heard back from one school which was surprising and delightful. Procrastinating on the tenth app by reading everything written by their ethno and jazz faculty available online before finishing the last damn sop. Bummer about your rejections. Was it to Indiana and Eastman? I heard they are ultra, super, impossibly competitive. Hope this torturing process results in at least a bite of fruit in the best or any form. Wish you all the best in the next weeks!

Hey unitstructures, which school did you hear back from?

  17. Hiii, yup: Musicology here, too.  I applied to three schools, so I kind of expect to have to do next year's cycle, as well.  I dunno..we'll see.  The waiting, though, is really bumming me out.

    Best of luck all around.
