  1. Thank you flower girl your post was very informative. One more question. Who do I need to go to to get some contact info for alumni and current students (specifically in the speech lang prog) at Columbia?

Um...this might sound stalker-ish, but I just searched "Columbia" on Facebook. Randomly contacted some people and they ended up being super nice.

  2. No I totally understand where you are coming from. Unfortunately, you may not getclosure any time soon because Columbia has given their students until May 15th to decide. Can I ask how you decided on Northwestern? I am going back n forth between Northwestern and Columbia. I can't make up my mind. I am a career changer so I have no background in speech. Both schools are going to take me equal amounts of time to finish. Also I've lived in NY my whole entire life so that's whats making Columbia more appealing for me. I visited Northwestern and it was located in a great area too. What have you heard about both schools through the grapevine? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi Ainos,

We're on the same boat! I have no background in speech either, so it's going to take me about 3 years to graduate. I decided on Northwestern based on a few factors:

    1. Ranking - Northwestern is ranked #2 in the country for SLP. http://grad-schools.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/best-graduate-schools/top-pathology-schools/rankings Columbia is ranked 38.

    2. Cost - Northwestern is relatively cheaper than Columbia. I've spoken with a couple of Columbia alums and they said it's really expensive, specially for me, since I have to take prereqs at Columbia too. They suggested taking it at CUNY in Brooklyn to save $. There's a scholarship that we can apply to, but in exchange, we'd have to stay in NYC and work at the public school system for 6 years! I'd love to live in NYC, but not sure if I can do it for 9 years total. I like the Pacific NW... hehe This might work out for you if you already live in NYC.

    3. Alums and current students - I've contacted a couple of Columbia alums. They told me that the clinic is not as diverse, BUT, the externships in NYC are invaluable. There's also another post on this thread, I believe, that talked about how poorly run Teacher's college is. Paraphrasing: he/she talked about poorly structured HWs, cost, professors you can't get a hold of etc. Au contraire, I spoke with a current grad student at Northwestern who also did not have a background in speech. She LOVES everything about it. She said that the professors, the program and her classmates are just amazing. She was also really happy about taking the prereqs at NWU because she felt like it made her more prepared for the grad program compared to other students who did not take it there.

    4. Location - I REALLY want to live in NYC, but it's just so expensive! I haven't personally visited NWU, but my fiancee had and he said that it's such a great campus. He thinks that Evanston, being a college town, creates a more tight-knit community, than let's say U of Chicago where everyone is scattered around the Chicago area. He also said it's better than U of Washington (where we went for undergrad) and I think that says a lot since we love our campus...hehe

The reasons why I'm still kind of considering Columbia is the location and their international/bilingual programs. I've volunteered internationally and thought it would be nice to do the same thing, but this time, I'd be able to help more as a professional SLP.

Hope that helps! If you decide to go to Northwestern, I'm probably going to see you there!! With both of us not having a bg in speech, we're probably going to be taking all the same classes! How exciting!!

  3. Flowergirl and Elle I would not assume you are rejected until you actually hear that you are rejected. TC has its admitted students weekend next weekend and NYU have theirs this coming Tuesday. Many students have not accepted their offers because the deadline does not pass. After people attend these events they are more likely to send in their decisions. I am predicting after these events happen is when you will start to hear your decisions. And, I am quite sure they will have a second round of these admitted students events somewhere down the line. Don't stress!

Thanks ainos! I'm pretty sure I'm going to Northwestern, but I really just want closure from Columbia...haha :)

  4. Hi all, i'm going to Northwestern too :) where are you guys planning to reside? I'm inclined towards Rogers Park...

Yay! Congrats everyone for getting-in :)

As for the apartments, I haven't looked yet. Are you guys planning on renting an apartment soon? My friends are telling me that I should probably look for an apartment now or during summer when most leases end... Even though school doesn't start until end of September...

    thoughts?

  5. Is anyone attending the Teachers College admitted students weekend next week? If so, any ideas on what to wear. Also, I'm a little confused on the times of the events because on the website it says starts on April 9th at 8 A.M. and ends on April 10th on 3:30 P.M. Whet time does it end on April 9th and what time does it start on April 10th?

What? There's an admitted students weekend?? I thought they're still releasing decisions? Should I just assume that since I haven't heard, that I'm rejected? :(

  6. Anybody starting their grad program this Fall? I just got accepted in their Speech-Language Pathology program, and though I haven't officially accepted it yet, I'm 98% sure that I will be going there. It would be fun to meet you guys before school starts... reply or send me a message. :) YAY!

  7. Pilipino at lalaki ako din! :D Teaching English in Spain was actually my plan if I didn't get a job after undergrad (and if I didn't get into any grad schools this time around). So I think it's even crazier that you're *also* going into SLP. Trippy!

Looks like someone on the Results Search said they called TC and they're sending out the next round of notifications next week. So, good luck to everyone then!

Frankly, I'm getting restless too from waiting on SDSU-UCSD's joint doctoral program in Language and Communicative Disorders. I'm supposed to know before mid-next week. Ahhh!

By the way, is there anyone else in here interested in SLP research and thinking about or pursuing a PhD? Just wondering!

Yay! Pilipino din ako, pero babae :)

I just found out that I got accepted to Northwestern. I'm so excited! woohoo! Though, I'm still waiting on TC.

    So far:

    Accepted: Boston U, Emerson, Northwestern

    Rejected: MGH

    Waiting: Columbia TC

    Good luck everyone!

  8. The reasons I have heard are that it's very expensive but they don't feel like they've actually learned anything other theory so they aren't getting their money's worth. Professors are too busy to actually respond to student's emails or really just acknowledge them at all. The funding is terrible/practically non-existant and there are all sorts of hidden fees. Group discussion and stand-alone lecture is the only type of instruction given. Not structured to handle students with jobs, although they claim to be (few night classes). Assignments tend to just be regurgitation of text, rather than meaningfully dealing with the topic at hand. And they don't particularly like a lot of the people (egotistical) nor the campus, which is very small.

ETA: I can tell you from my girlfriend's experience that I have seen pretty much all of these points to be true, and I specifically did not apply to TC because of this, even though some of my family members had gone to TC (decades ago) and wanted me to.

Wow, that's good to know. Thank you for sharing the information! Hope that it works out in the end for your girlfriend!

  9. Just for what it's worth, I currently go to one of the colleges at Columbia and I'm dating a TC student (and know a few others) and they all absolutely HATE Teacher's College. None of them are in the SLP program, so that might be good for all I know, but I just thought it might help people to know.

Do you know the reasons why they hate Teacher's college? I'm very curious. Still waiting on TC because it's my 1st choice (tie with Northwestern).

  10. Ha!--love it. Thanks for the advice Tulip, makes sense. I haven't made the decision yet but more and more it looks like SD. Not looking forward to that big -GULP- when I give up my spot at UW, though...

Can anyone point me in the direction of finding general info about departmental funding in our field? I know each field is different, but what's it like for speechies? None of my acceptance letters (or rather, e-mail notifications of acceptance, not the official graduate school acceptance letter, which I haven't received yet) included any info about funding (e.g. TA-ships and the like). All I know is with SDSU I was accepted with "classified" status which apparently means high priority for being offered TA positions. But nothing concrete. Should I contact departments and say, "you know I'd really like to come to your school...is there anything you can do for me? *wink wink*" except not like that at all and way more appropriately.

Or, is it just that masters programs in slp don't offer funding? Or does it completely depend on the school, and private/public status?

I'm surprised that you're picking SD! I don't think that UW is that prestigious, it's a public university. Ivy league is prestigious. UW is ranked #5 in the country for the SLP program and there are reasons why they are ranked well. Currently, I'm taking pre-req classes in the Speech department and I like what I see. The clinic is right next door to where we have our classes. The professors have been nothing but helpful and receptive too all my questions and inquiries. And since I'm changing professions, I have found them available to give me guidance, information and advice.

Also, if you're doing Med-SLP, you also have to remember that UW has its own hospital that's ranked #1 for Primary care, and I think they're still in the top 10 for research. Such a good place to do your internships and stuff.

As far as price, I don't think UW is that expensive. Compared to other places I've looked at: Northwestern, Boston University, Emerson, Columbia, MGH IHP, it's the cheapest considering how highly-ranked it is. (And it's also not in the middle of nowhere:P)

I went to UW for my undergrad but it's in Electrical Engineering. I love Seattle. Everyone's friendly, it's relaxed, diverse and the campus is really nice. I think you should visit. It's a common misconception that it rains all the time, maybe overcast, but not rain :P

Well, that's all I have I guess. I'm sure someone in the Med SLP waiting list is cursing me for trying to convince you to check out UW. Here's a link to the SLP program ranking: http://grad-schools.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/best-graduate-schools/top-pathology-schools/rankings/

  11. Hi Everyone,

I just found this forum and I'm glad that I'm not the only one checking my online status every minute. (Just in case they posted the result 1 second after I logged-off).

So far here are my results:

    Accepted: Boston University, Emerson College

    Rejected: MGH IHP

Waiting: Columbia TC, Northwestern, University of Washington (Post Bac Program)

My undergrad background is actually in Electrical Engineering so my GPA is sub par (3.4) compared to what I've seen in grad school requirements (3.6). I'm hoping that they'll realize that it's just impossible to get a GPA above a 3.5 :)

To people who are waiting for U of Washington, good luck! I went there for my undergrad and currently taking prereq classes and it's such a great program! I love the professors and the clinic is just next door where the grad students have complete control (w/ supervision of course) of their patients. If only they'd let me start grad school right away instead of applying for Post Bac first, it will be my top choice.

I also got the Columbia email last night and I thought I was rejected from the first 2 sentences! I almost fainted!

Good luck to everyone and just maybe, we'll meet in real life someday :D

    ~k
