    Claiming CU Boulder waitlist. ☺️
With the utmost peace and love, I want to ask respectfully that if you were admitted (or even waitlisted) and you don't plan to attend CU Boulder, please inform your decision to decline to the Department as soon as possible since it was mentioned to me that getting off the waitlist is directly related to the people admitted. At this point, I'm almost begging. From the beginning, Colorado was one of my top choices, and considering that, on top of it, this cycle has been brutal, I would really appreciate your kind decision to decline. Please don't read this as a pressure of any kind, just as a considerate request.
Thank you in advance, and my DM's are open for anything you want to chat about it.

Last night was absolutely brutal: heard back three rejections in the span of half an hour, then a fourth an hour later, now I just woke up to fifth that was posted (no email sent) overnight. 0a/8r/1p
Desperately searching out any news from UCSC, has anyone applied or heard back anything? I wanna wait a little longer before reaching out to the department but if anyone has heard anything and could let me know it would be greatly appreciated!

Received Harvard rejection, as expected. That's it for me. 0 for 8 lol. On the plus side, I know what went wrong and how to fix it. Might take a shot again next year. Might skip the PhD, as it's not strictly necessary. While this was disappointing, I'm grateful to have a career I enjoy that pays the bills.
Best of luck to all of you who were accepted to programs! You earned it. To those who aren't, keep your head up. It's a tough process. Don't let rejection deter you from pursuing your dreams. It's a temporary setback and may prove to be a blessing in disguise.

Claiming Brown acceptance! Second time applying. Last year I was rejected by 12 unis (including Brown). Never (never) give up. This process can become soul draining and (particularly for int students) resource draining. But there is always a chance to improve your application. Time and dedication trumps (at least a little bit) the whole randomness inherent to this process. Opening a beer tonight :).

    Wanted to bump this....
This happened with me at Georgetown. It's possible. Make sure you application is relevant to current times, and building relationships with the admissions office is key. Eagerness and persistence goes a long way.

So I just realized I can't delete/edit my original post, but I just wanted to come back to update this for posterity.

I wanted to say thank you to @PolicyApplier and to say that they are 110% correct in their analysis -- especially when it comes to having patience and being gentle with yourself. I'm pretty sure that almost everyone reading this thread can imagine how it feels to get rejected from the program you really want to go to; I know I was personally torn up about it.

However, the universe often works in really bizarre ways. A few days after I wrote this post, I got admitted into both Harvard and Yale. I do not know how it happened, but I do know that many tears were shed. I just wanted to share my particular story as an anecdote to anyone whom this may resonate with.

Keep chipping away it; after the breakdown comes the breakthrough.

If I understand correctly, if your GPA is on the lower end you usually need some combination of strong work experience and GRE score.
There’s also value outside of just the Ivy League schools, so it may be worth looking into why you want the Ivy leagues outside of just their names. They are gonna be ungodly expensive and the value of education you get at them may not be that much better, if better at all, than schools like Washington, Syracuse, Wisconsin, Texas, etc. Hell, by US News MPP rankings Columbia is only slightly better than Minnesota and is ranked lower than Texas and Ohio State.
If I were you, I’d try to get your quant score to somewhere in the 160s and not focus on the Ivy Leagues with the exception of maybe one just to do it. Best of luck with your journey and be patient with yourself if possible. Grad school applications can be mentally shattering without some sort of self-patience.

Thank you @sab333 for the info! You kept my morale up for a bit longer and today I learned I’ve been moved up to finalist for Persian. I am beyond thrilled! For those of you still waiting, best of luck — our acceptance deadline is March 25th so I imagine more emails will start rolling out a few days after that.
    Good luck to everyone!

Also an alternate for Advanced Japanese! Didn't get this far last year, don't really expect to get promoted to finalist, but I'm glad they thought I was almost-there :'). That's all the recognition I needed, and hopefully I'll get it when I apply next year again. I wonder if there are more alternates than finalists...

Congrats on making it to alternate status! I'm hoping that you get promoted imminently!
I was an alternate for advanced Japanese in 2017 and ultimately I didn't get promoted back then
Strictly speaking, I think the chances that you get promoted for advanced Japanese specifically are.. hmm.. well, slim I think. The article I posted a few weeks ago indicated that there are 26 slots total. I am not sure how many intermediate level students and advanced level students there will be, but assuming its evenly split, then there are 13 students per level. As an alternate, I learned that at least one of the people initially accepted have to decline in order for an alternate to be promoted. Finally, there's the overarching question of how many alternates CLS picks for per level. I have to imagine that they choose somewhere between three and ten alternates per level for a language like Japanese. Presuming that someone does decline the scholarship (which I was personally considering doing a month or two ago), we don't know what priority alternates get and in what sort've rank-order they'd be promoted in. I'd imagine that they'd use a randomized selection process at that point, perhaps giving a slight boost to those who haven't studied abroad before.
In any case, I'm going to hope for you to get promoted and come! Let's hope for a favorable outcome.
