Hi Sigwarz! I'm planning to send the GAF in with my documents, but not on letterhead or with the Fulbright Commission's stamp. At least in my case, the funding from the Fulbright grant was listed in my CAS, and so my understanding is that sending along the GAF isn't strictly necessary, but I thought to include it just in case.

Thaaanks! I just got my vignette. I ended up submitting the GAF with a letterhead but no stamp. Fulbright does not have an official stamp. This was fine. I chose the "better safe than sorry" route and included everything. Might as well have squeezed myself into that UPS envelope. :rolleyes:B)

  2. To UK fulbrighters from US:

Hi all! I have a visa question. For those of you applying for a UK visa from outside the US
, did any of you find it necessary to submit your Grant Authorization Form with an official letterhead and stamped by the Fulbright Commission? I have the GAF, but it will take some time to get it on an official letterhead. Don't have much of that. I am willing to get it done, but I was wondering what you all did. Appreciate the help!

  3. Going to have a drink tonight for this forum. I have never been so engaged in a dialogue with as much momentum as i did this. Everyone here was so friendly and helpful, and reminded me of why i chose to pursue graduate school in the first place. To be surrounded by like-minded scholars such as you guys makes the world of a difference in me continuing to work hard and strive for higher education. Also, that google spreadsheet was impressive. Wow! The force is real. If the planets are aligned right, I hope to run into some of you in the future.

Cheers. Don't stop reaching for those goals. If you have come this far, you have come a long way.

Last year there were 44 awarded and the year before that 35.  From the statistics page on the Fulbright website only a few of the awards had applicants but no recipients: Fulbright/University of Oxford Clarendon Scholarship Award last year and Fulbright/University of St. Andrews Award in Arts & Humanities back in 2015.  I think the partnership awards are absolutely given out each year (Lancaster only had 2 applicants back in 2015 and seems like neither were selected).  I think close to 44 awards will be given out this year based on the last couple of years and what is on the US/UK Fulbright website.

Also, all of the partnership awards are for a single principal candidate for each partnership University, the only exception is the open award which has two winners.  Also you're only competing against those who applied for the same partnership, ie last year there were 13 applicants for Leicester, which was narrowed down to at least 3 semi-finalists which became 1 principal candidate and 2 alternates.

    Thank you!

Well, my application ended up going through really late because of an administrative error, and so I just got my offer letter 2 days ago--and in it, they announced I had been awarded a scholarship for the exact amount of the full tuition fee. But UEA doesn't offer full scholarships for international post grads, as far as I can tell from their website. So I'm wondering if this unnamed yet very large and unexpected scholarship could be what I'm hoping it might be...won't know until Fulbright officially notifies, though!

@inkstainedarm That is interesting!! I hope so too! I also got an email a couple of days ago from my Uni with the first line of it saying "We are delighted to confirm that we have now received either your deposit payment or official confirmation of sponsorship to secure your place on the MSc Conservation and Biodiversity programme." I thought that was interesting how it didnt specify either the deposit payment or the scholarship, especially since I secured my deposit since the deadline in November 2016. I am hoping the timing of this email is because they will notify us soon aka THIS WEEK.

Yep! I'm waiting to hear back about Leicester.  What are you hoping to study at the University of Exeter?

@Dilemma1 I hope we hear results tomorrow. How did your interview go? I am going to start my MSc in Biodiversity and Conservation at the Penryn campus. What are you planning on studying?

Hey UK applicants: did any of you get a scholarship award in your acceptance/offer letters?

I didn't get any scholarships. Fulbright is my only chance at funding my Masters. Any particular reason why you ask?

  8. I'm either going to have the best birthday month, or the worst. Depending on the news from the UK. Reading about the Netherlands, Bulgaria, and Poland. Congrats! I hope to know by early this week. So close, but so FARRRRR.

I did get confirmation from my Uni that they received my deposit to secure a place for me in Cornwall. Unrelated to the Fulbright, but the email got me excited.

Anyone else from on the gradcafe waiting on UK results??

Wait--were you asked a question on US politics? That's so interesting, because I definitely was not asked that, and yet their interview FAQ say that interviewees are all asked the same questions! My questions were more about what I would bring to the UK, where I would travel in the UK, leadership experience/style, and why the Fulbright was important to me.

It was a general question on US politics. "How would you describe a current topic in US politics to a local?" I also got the elevator question. Something along the lines of "How would you respond if I asked you what your plans were in the UK while conversing in an elevator?" I also was asked a more practical, what is my plan B if I didn't get the award. I thought that was interesting.

I've interviewed at Cambridge and Oxford, accepted at both, and interviewed unsuccessfully with the US-UK Fulbright commission if you had any specific questions for me (either publicly or privately). The general tip I would have, is make sure they are impressed by how impactful your work is. My first project was on synthetic chemistry to improve cancer outcomes (no one in the panel was even remotely STEM-related), but based on their follow up questions I don't think they really understood why I thought my project was important and generally seemed bored (so I wish I explained it more fundamentally and was more engaging). Interestingly though, when they found out I started my academic career in the humanities, mentioning an award I won on postmodern American fiction, they lit up like a match. So I guess a major tip is know your audience. If you have any specific questions, let me know!

Great answer! Thank you! I felt that my panel was engaged, so I'm hoping this increases my chances for an award. :P

    HI everyone,

New to this entire process, this is my first time applying for a Fulbright? Anyone here apply to partner awards in the UK? Scotland, specificially?

Thanks and best of luck to everyone here!

@shaynes007 This is my first time as well. I am applying for a partnership award to the University of Exeter for an MSc in Conservation and Biodiversity. It's my first time that I applied as well and got interviewed a couple of weeks ago. The wait is horrible! I am crossing my fingers. Best of luck to you. What course are you applying for and why? This is so exciting to be a part of this forum!

Hey Sigwarz! 2am--how did that go?? Did you choose to stay up all night or wake up (extremely) early? I had my interview last Monday at 9:10am my time, and I think (I hope) it went ok--I don't feel like my answers were outstanding though, and so now I'm filled with the admittedly predictable self doubt and self recrimination. Best of luck to you!! Based on past years, we could hear as soon as by the end of March!

It went well, but naturally I have my doubts. Everyone was friendly and I did get some feedback from them when I asked them questions. One person from the panel thought my project was very clear and that I was well-informed in my field. The question regarding US politics was tricky, with the current political atmosphere not supporting environmental initiatives (I am doing my Masters in Conservation and Biodiversity), however I think I answered diplomatically. I tried to take a nap before the interview, which did not happen (too excited). So I basically stayed up. Good luck to us! Thanks for the heads up for late March. This is something to look forward to!

I saw the spreadsheet on fulbright applicants. Do I add myself to the spreadsheet?

Thanks for all this great info/fulbright forum!

Hello all! First time poster and this was the first time I applied for a Fulbright. I was selected as a semi-finalist for research at a UK institute (Bristol, specifically). I haven't received an email about an interview and I'm wondering what this means for me, realistically. Anyone have advice on what to expect? Thanks and congratulations/good luck to everyone going through interviews/experiences similar to mine!

    @inkstainedarm and @jlking

I applied this year for the first time as well. I was selected as a semi-finalist for University of Exeter, Cornwall, and was interviewed via Skype on February 17. I've been waiting (very impatiently) for May to come because that is the absolute latest I have read for them to notify if you have been accepted or not.

I think my interview went fairly well, standard questions, although due to my time difference (I am from Guam) I was interviewed at 2am.

Has anyone else had an interview? And how did you feel it went? Good luck to us all!!!
