So if we don't receive anything tomorrow, I assume we should expect rejection? Also, I'm guessing if I haven't heard from Indiana or UT-Austin that I've been rejected there as well?
-
Got my rejection from Virginia. Honestly, seeing as Virginia was one of the lower-ranked programs I applied to, I can't see myself getting into anywhere else. I'm mentally done with this application cycle, and I'm not going to wait for the rejection letters to find me for the remaining schools. I think I'm going to go camping in the forests for a bit or something. I really can't function on a mental or emotional level right now. I need to stay away from everything and everyone for a bit on my own. It's been great posting with you guys. I wish you the best of luck and hope you don't fall into the same fucking pathetic failure of a life that I ended up with.

So I can say with full confidence I have been rejected from UT-Austin.
-
I'm happy I never even bothered applying to Michigan
-
I gave up a long time ago. It's better for me to assume I'm going to rejected everywhere. In that case, everything else is better by comparison.
-
Well, looks like that's the end of my UT-Austin dream. No e-mail.

Japanese isn't too far off from Korean in terms of language structure + similar (sometimes identical) words that we use. I think I can ease into, though I would much prefer to be in America studying at a Ph.D. program. Officially speaking, I still have about 12 more (though 2 or 3 of these are all but certain rejections). It's tough sitting through it all though, watching all of your work summed up into a short e-mail.

They do have these in English. I believe the University of Tokyo does not (else I would also consider them as well) and requires you to be bilingual. Attaining a Ph.D. from Japan basically means I'll be working in Korea/Japan/China for the rest of my life, but I really don't have an issue with that.
-
I'm planning on applying to Waseda University since a good friend of mine I knew at Chicago came from that program. Also, I'll be applying to Kobe University. At the very least, I think my knowledge of Japanese universities is okay. However, applications don't open until March so that's an issue.

I am an American citizen. It's more or less a poor joke about how most Korean men are dragged back to the motherland to serve in the military when they don't have any foreseeable future in the States. Heck, I've heard of some Korean-Americans who stayed in Korea for too long and ended up in the military because they didn't know they were also Korean citizens as well. The citizenship law is a mess in South Korea, but I'm fairly certain I'm just an American citizen. If I live in Korea however, I think parentage and other stuff gets dragged into and complicates it. Like I said, it's a mess, but if I really don't have any other realistic options regarding jobs or Ph.D. programs, teaching in Korea or Japan might be my only other choices. And quite frankly, I have no clue what to expect if I move to Korea. Aside from being an American citizen with no foreseeable Korean citizenship, I really don't know how the law can change. 군대 is a major pain in the ass for a lot of people.

It's only been one or two people who have been contacted fairly informally. I wouldn't say that just yet. That having been said, I contacted someone at UT Austin who informed me that the admissions process has been completed and decisions were being sent out. Whether or not these are being staggered is beyond me.
-
Fight On! Good luck to you as well. I don't really see it as a competition and hope the best for you. All I want at this point is even one school that wants me. Going back to South Korea and doing military service for two years is an incredibly shitty alternative.
-
I applied to USC (as well as went there for undergrad), and I can confidently say I have heard literally nothing.
-
Well, I stand corrected. Congrats on the admission. I'm just going to sit here and assume I've been rejected from everywhere at this point. It's really not worth putting myself through this process and fucking my head up with this.
-
I mean he also claimed UGA admit where I can't find any other person who got into Georgia so far... Forgive me, but I'm a bit skeptical about this person's claims.
-
Yeah, I've realized this as well. Either she's a POI or this is a really elaborate troll on his part.
-
I'm assuming these e-mails are automated, so, unfortunately, I believe it's safer to assume rejection. Looks like I'm going to strike out and contemplate life before dying as a dry husk in the desert.
-
Looks like Indiana rejection for me then....... I'm honestly wondering why I'm even still breathing at this point.
-
Yeah, I'm curious too because I'm nervous since I applied there as well. If it's staggered then that's fine, but I've learned to look at everything from a pessimist's point of view.
-
UT-Austin director who I've been in contact with for a bit has informed be the admissions process at UT-Austin has concluded, though she also said all decisions should be coming out prior to the end of February. Take that as you will.
-
If one doesn't receive an interview invite from a Ph.D. program, should we assume rejection or is this exclusive to Vanderbilt?
-
I'm in the same boat as you (albeit my undergrad GPA was abysmal) but I took an MA at Chicago to somewhat make up for it. Research isn't too hard to come across, although I suppose at this stage it's sort of a concern, but I'm confident you'll get in somewhere. Everyone has their strengths and weaknesses and my weakness happens to be my GPA. I'm certain you have strengths elsewhere that you can work on.
-
Assume troll until claimed. On top of the usual trend that weekends don't usually see decisions sent out, it's also Super Bowl Sunday and I highly doubt anyone sent anything from their schools. Although what is concerned me is that there was another UC Irvine admit, which doesn't make me too particularly confident about my chances if it is true.
-
Seems like the one guy who posted it had a personalized letter from the dean, so it isn't too unusual to assume this is an exception to the general case. Might be the same case with my friend and UChicago.
-
They do not, at least from my experience. If it makes you feel better, I also feel incredibly horrible right now which is only compounded by the fact that I have work on Monday. On the bright side, I have video games to let some steam loose.
