The funny thing is that I am most annoyed that I didn't even get honorable mention. Last time when I wasn't yet in my Ph.D program I got honorable mention (in April 08). This time, nothing. Boo.
They were supposed to come out in December 2008...still haven't come out and there is no longer a date.
In other news, I just got an email from Ford saying I did not get a fellowship.
Actually, the majority of winners last year heard first by email. A friend of mine who won it was notified first by email and the majority of the people who won last year reported that they too heard by email on last year's gradcafe thread.
But that doesn't mean they'll stick to that.
And every time I see in my inbox that a couple of GradCafe posts have occurred, I think, "Now is the moment I find out that others are getting emails that say they have an award...and I don't have one of those emails!"
I'm in my second year as well. A woman in my department applied last year in her second year and won the award, so it is definitely not only for people who are just starting their programs.
Last year, those who won awards were notified by email on April 10th, I believe, and those who did not receive fellowships received a regular letter in the mail. I would think they will continue with this method which was used for the first time last year...but we'll see.
