  1. Hi Everyone! I was wondering if anyone on this forum either is or knows someone who is a counselling psychologist or a graduate student in the area? I am becoming increasingly interested in the work counselling psychologists perform on a daily basis, where they generally work, and what kinds of career opportunities are available to them. There is information about some of these things online, but sometimes I like to hear straight from the source! :) So if anyone could chime in, I would greatly appreciate it! Best wishes and stay safe,
  2. I really want to teach high school, but everyone keeps telling me it's such a bad idea because I will never find a job. When I attend teachers college here in Canada (will be attending university of Ottawa), I'm pretty confident that i'll be able to finish near the top, if not at the top, of my class. I had nearly all A+'s in undergraduate. Even if I finish with excellent marks in teachers college, will I still have no chance finding a job anywhere in Canada? I'm so confused, it's like everyone just keeps saying there are literally 0 jobs, but I had plenty of young teachers a few years ago while I was in high school (who were full timers) who clearly weren't super brilliant people or anything like that, so how did they get a job? If someone could weigh in on this it would be greatly appreciated, I'm really confused about my life right now..
  3. Hello, If one has a masters degree in education (and performed well of course), but is only a teacher and not an administrator or educational professional, can one still be admitted to an EdD program in order to advance one's career?
  4. Hello everyone, I was wondering if anyone knew anything about education research in the area of improving the teaching and curriculum for social sciences and humanities in public schools? I really love both areas (e.g., sociology, history, psychology, anthropology), but prior to university I had no idea how enlightening and important these areas were due to the fact that the high schools in my area (and I suspect many other areas) did an underwhelming job of teaching these subjects and properly harnessing their power. Originally, I thought I just wanted to teach for a living, but my recent work with a professor doing research has allowed me to realize just how much I enjoy the research process, and that perhaps I would like to do it for a living someday. Specifically, I would like to be involved in research pertaining to the teaching/curriculum surrounding the humanities and social sciences in high school. I am currently in the process of applying to various teachers colleges in Canada (e.g., UofT, UBC). My question is: Is this an area that I could actually do research in, or complete a graduate thesis on (e.g., masters and/or PhD)? Moreover, what kind of career should I be looking into given that these are my interests? Of course, this second question is a highly individualized one, but perhaps some of you have recommendations Best wishes all, E&L.
  5. So...I should start off by saying I am a Canadian in my final year of law school at the University of Victoria. I always knew that I had a passion for education in many ways, but I decided to pursue law school because I had a fantastic experience interning during my undergraduate degree. However, I now find myself only months away from graduating law school with absolutely no desire to be a practicing lawyer and as a result my interest in education has only grown. Although I would love to teach (and i know one must teach before admin positions become available), I think the ideal career for me would be in an administration position or somehow being involved with the curriculum design. Fortunately, by the time I graduate law school i will only have about 10K worth of debt! Certainly nothing to brag about, but I have friends who have amassed nearly 100K so I don't think I will be in too much trouble. Ultimately, I would like to know if my law degree will be any sort of advantage? I really do not know what people in the education world think of JD's, but is there any way in which I could use my JD to my advantage in my pursuit of some career in education? Thanks everyone!
