You're right, you really don't need a car. When I went to my department's open house several students expressed regret for bringing a car even though "everybody" says you "need" a car in LA. This isn't really true for most USC students who are living nearby.

You're in a very central location with plenty of public transportation options. In addition to public transportation USC offers free shuttles to areas like downtown LA and Marina Del Rey. Also as a cherry on top, USC offers free rideshare (Campus Cruiser) in and around campus... you can take it anywhere within their boundaries including one of the many grocery stores close by.

This is the first time i've heard about Campus Cruiser! Thanks so much!!!

  2. I'll be attending USC in the fall! How difficult will I be making my life if I don't have a car? I was just planning on living close(ish) to the health sciences campus next to a bus/train route. I'm not a very social person and figure paying for an occasional uber a few times a month will be less expensive than a car/parking/gas/insurance.

Hey, does anyone know if you're supposed to bring copies of your CV to an interview? I read somewhere that they'll ask for it sometimes, but I only saw it mentioned that 1 time.

I thought it was helpful to have when I was interviewing with other professors who weren't my POI or in the department to help them quickly get to know me

Hey! I'll be at Kent for dev psych on Feb 2nd. Kent didn't offer any travel reimbursement when I was first invited to interview weekend, but I just received an email a couple of days ago from my POI informing me that the department could reimburse me for reasonable travel costs up to $400, so it's possible that you'll just hear about getting reimbursed later.

I was offered reimbursement when I was invited (health psych). My POI said they only have funds to cover air travel for selected candidates.
I think/hope there is a strong possibility of getting reimbursed later. My travel costs are only going to be $200 so hopefully the other $200 is able to be applied to someone else?

  5. I am very forthright...PIs aren't looking to create a carbon copy of themselves/ a 100% match.
Plus there is no benefit in not being honest. Otherwise, you get accepted in the lab and have to admit "actually...."

In an interview I had, the POI actually expressed that she hopes she is able to learn and explore with me down my intended path

  6. I am clumsy and dropped my phone and the screen is cracked...not a spider web by any means just a hairline crack that runs like a hypotenuse tangent to the home button... I have a screen protector over it now but the bottom part of the crack that is not on the actual screen part of the phone catches the light/is noticeable since my phone is white :(

Do you think this is something the admission's team will care about? I've put a lot of thought into how i'm presenting myself (i.e my suit) and don't want this to reflect badly on me... $149 is a chunk of change and i'd rather save the money if it's not a big deal?

    Hey All!

So I have a question about something.

Back in November a professor told me to save the date for an interview because they weren't allowed to formally invite me yet. I reached to them recently to send an application update and they replied but seemed much more cagey.

I know the program has begun to offer formal interview invites so I'm thinking they aren't going to formally invite me to interview.

I'm okay with not getting an interview at that program but am a little peeved at a professor for saying something and then going back on it. Should I say something? My intention would be to stop this from happening to students in the future.

Apparently, it is quite common for professors to string along applicants like this... have even heard stories about people being told by professor not accept offers from any other schools after an interview and then waiting and end up not getting an offer!! I've been advised from grad students to not take anything verbal too seriously

I saw that one person got invited to UC Irvine's interview weekend for the Social area at the end of January. Has anyone else heard from UC Irvine? They reached out early in December saying that my application looks very favorable and mentioning an issue with funding and that they'd notify me as things change. A few days later their website got updated indicating that the funding issue got resolved, but I haven't been contacted again. I assume that for an end-of-January weekend the invites must have been sent out already - does anyone who has applied to UC Irvine's Social area have more information by any chance? Thanks!

I don't have any further information :( - but I just wanted to say that I applied to the same area and haven't heard anything, other than emailing back and forth with the graduate director in early December due to some transcript issues.

I saw that same invite and it seems to line up with last year's invite dates, but I thought it was strange that there has only been one report so far. I'm still holding out hope! Good luck!

do you think the funding issue translated to less invites this year

Has anyone heard from the following schools?

VCU, SMU, Memphis, Northwestern, Kentucky, University of Denver, Miami University (Ohio), University of Missouri - Kansas City

Thanks! Started to get really anxious seeing so many invites.

I heard from PI I work with at Northwestern that they have until Monday (1/15) to finish reviewing applications and then I assume invites will go out shortly after (sometime next week!)
