So Carleton replied my email and this has to be the rudest reply I’ve ever gotten. I emailed them about my application status and apparently I got rejected. I got this reply...

“Thank you for your interest in the Carleton University Master of Journalism program, and for your patience as our admissions committee conducted its deliberations. As you know, the Master of Journalism is a small enrolment program with a limited capacity to admit international students. I am afraid that we are not able to make a recommendation of admission in your case. We do wish you all the best with your future endeavors.”

Is this even fair? You didn’t let me know all this while till I messaged you and you are no rejecting me? Wow. Carleton has disappointed me

Really sorry to hear that @T-boy I think official letters sooner rather than later are a good practice. Not sure if may be you had been kept on a waitlist or what before they responded but it is just ridiculous how they handle applicants! Yes they know how much we want to get into their schools but they should regard that as a need to be professional and courteous at all times to applicants.

Sorry again. Are there other schools you applied to? Has the status changed on Carleton Central

So I called Ryerson today to know my status update and I got the same vague answer like the email they sent to me. They said they can’t tell me when to expect a decision but that my application is being reviewed.

I later called Carleton to know my status as well and I was told that my application is still with the department and it has not been recommended for admission but it is still being reviewed.

At this point, I am confused and honestly tired of waiting since January for a decision. I don’t even know what to do at this point.

I find their lack of keeping within the standard time of giving responses 2-3 months after deadlines being in January, to be very unprofessional. I fear that it doesn’t look good for our candidature, but they still should just inform students within a reasonable time frame.

Please has anyone heard from Ryerson at all because i got an email from them on the 29th of March saying this

“We would like to take this opportunity to again thank you for your interest in Graduate Studies at Ryerson University.  This acknowledgement confirms that we received your documents through the applicant upload portal for the School of Graduate Studies for the term commencing Fall 2018 for the following program:

Master of Journalism - Full Time

To confirm the status of your document submissions, you may log into the Applicant Portal to determine which documents have been received by our office.  Please upload any missing documents listed.

Your application has been reviewed for consideration and has been forwarded to the Program Admissions Committee for review.  Once an admission decision has been reached, you will be notified by email.  Due to high volume of inquiries, we are unable to respond to individual requests concerning your admissions decision.”

I did not understand what they meant by they just received my application cos I finished applying in January. So does this mean I’m waitlisted, might be accepted or what?

Have you called them to ask?

I applied to Carleton and have submitted everything by 2nd Jan. Nothing from them until 30 Mar that someone told me by email I was not selected for the first round of offers and this year they probably won't start a second round.

It still says "Preliminary review required" in Central Carleton so I'd have to assume they probably didn't even look at my stuff except for my city of residence. Why don't they inform applicants when they entered the waitlist? Or in my case, nowhere.

I think the reason they probably didn’t inform candidates about waitlists may be because of the strike. Strike only ended last week. It sucks they have kept many student just waiting and informing people is just the most professional thing to do.

Am still hoping that they can get information out to student this week who have yet to be informed as well.

After I got recommended for assessment, it took a long time for me to receive the official offer. This was during the strike. But since the strike ended, it should be faster now :)

    Congrats Nat!!!

I don't think requesting money back is a thing, because it went through OUAC. I tried with a different school but they won't give me the refund.

I am curious.. did your acceptance come on a Friday or middle of the week?

  6. Yes congratulations Nat, my application still says recommended for assessment but I have lost hope.

Thought schools save Friday’s for acceptances... thought it was a thing.

anyways... am still anxiously refreshing my Carleton Central page and outlook account. :(

  7. Hey!

I have been lurking around on this forum since I have not heard back yet from the school. Still hopeful, but at this rate it seems rather doubtful of an acceptance. In any case, for those who were waiting for response from the school, have you guys heard anything? For those who are at the school have you heard any news that decisions have all been made and that the incoming class has been finalized?

Hi Everyone, I'd like to pass my best wishes to everyone who received got their results. For those of us still stuck, anyone has any idea on when can we expect the results?

I have to reply back to SIPA and Maxwell by 15th of March (and this is after I requested them for a deadline extension!) but I want to know my NPSIA results too before I make any decision. I tried calling all night yesterday (and yes the time difference is 10+ hours) but the calls never went through.   Thanks in advance :)

I have the same issue. If we accept an admission from another school and then hear back from NPSIA positively and want to decline that offer from the other school to go with NPSIA I beleive some here mentioned that schools would still be okay with that. Correct? And I say “Okay” meaning they may have more work on their plate but that is happens.

This is not obviously a good practice but schools that give offers late and those that give early must experience this issues frequently.

Do you think they share communication with similar departments especially  knowing students who applied to their program and accepted..for example like inter province schools for example must know, no? GSPIA and NPSIA..eg

Would they know if a student gets accepted to one of the other and accepts..? And would that affect our admission to the other school if we accept before the school sends out official acceptance letters to us?

Yep. Field designation, stream, specialization, etc. all mean the same thing. The form for ‘field designation’ should have been the only thing you filled out to indicate what you want to ‘specialize’ in at NPSIA.

    Thanks !loopylex.

So am curious...For those here that have gotten the unofficial emails has your specialization changed on Carleton Central now?

@loopylex I know you mentioned above that in the past before the official acceptance Carleton central shows this change..but am curious to know if anyone here has seen the change happen already...or will they have to wait until the official acceptance....

Just wanted to add to this. I know a few people who ended up with their second choice. It does depend on how popular your first choice is that year. The intelligence stream last year was the most popular, and as a result some people got their second choice, which was usually security and defence. There's so much overlap though between a lot of the streams that don't be too worried if you don't get a specific designation or not. You only have to take 1.5 credits that fit in that field anyways (and the econ course), after that you're free to take whatever interests you. I don't know of anyone who didn't get at least their second choice though!

If I remember right, the field designations showed up on Carleton Central before getting official acceptance.

Are you referring to the field designations that we selected on the preference forms?  I think am forgetting whether there was a place on the general application where we selected a specialization...

Am curious now whether on Carleton Central they will update that specialization for you when they are going through applications in order to place us in certain categories.. -I am one of those still praying that I hear back from the school soon.. ;(

    Hey everyone,

I just got off the phone with NPSIA, according to them some decisions have been made, but no one has been informed. Offers should start rolling out by next week or the week after.

Stress level just went from 0 to 100 real quick.

Okay yeah anxiety is rising by the second!

Has anyone's status from this group changed? What are the statuses now from members here?
