Licensed Professional Counselor en route to PhD?

I am intent upon earning my PhD in Psychology. My primary interest is in clinical counseling, but Forensic Psychology has been an interest. Do not know just yet. However, I have been looking at getting my LPC Certificate first then jumping from there to a full blown PhD. Is it possible/feasible/recommended to use an LPC cert as a stepping stone to a PhD? Any input/advice/recommendations would be very helpful!
