@natolambert just set up an account here, as yet another member of the top-200-not-receiving-funding group.  Thanks for the work you've already put in to addressing this problem.  I think it's pretty unacceptable for them to be so misleading about the number of fellowships to be awarded, but I did have a constructive thought, and I'd love to hear what anyone else in this group thinks about it:

Assuming the funding is a lost cause, it wouldn't cost anyone anything for them to still give us some kind of credit for being in the group that would have been awarded under normal circumstances.  That is, what am I going to put on my CV with regard to this?  I've sent STI-TEC messages, but not heard anything.  Anyone know more about this, or have further thoughts?

I would get behind this. They definitely have a ton of emails to go through but let us know when you get an answer eventually.

So there's still some hope?  Were these representatives at the DOD you spoke to?

I called my congressional representative + senators, and they sent me an email of a congressional staffer Jain Thapa who supposedly works with budgeting on DoD matters. He responded to my email saying he would follow up next week.

  3. As another member of the group receiving final 200 but not selected because of funding, I called a couple representatives and it sounds like a contact with the DoD will be following up next week RE funding. Don't expect much, but would want more transparency in the future at least.

"As you know, your application was chosen to move forward to the final step in the process: the DoD Panel Review. We regret to inform you that you were not selected as part of the 2018 class. This year we planned to award roughly 200 fellowships and only 69 were selected due to the budget. You were in the top 200 and have been placed on the alternates selection list for the fellowship. This does not guarantee that you will be awarded the fellowship but serves as notice of  your ranking and your potential in the unlikely event that the DoD will select additional awardees."
