  1. Does anyone have anything new to add for CS? Any new cool places to hang out or live?

I lived in College Station for 4 years and in Bryan for 2 years. People advise against Bryan, and yes, parts of it can be VERY sketchy, but the area is so small that within a few months, you'll learn where not to be. Downtown Bryan has a lot going on. I actually lived in a downtown loft my last year there, and it was very cool. They have "First Fridays" where everyone walks around for exhibitions and the like. There is some live music and good restaurants. Madden's and Square One are probably my two favorite restaurants in the entire area. Most of my friends who stayed in the area after undergrad migrated to Bryan and bought houses there. It's nice to get away from all of the crowds in College Station.

  2. she has a good sense of humour about it. she even left it all up for a day so some of the professors could see it. the part she hated the most was when we covered up her last name on her nameplate and wrote "ochocinco" instead.

she is plotting her revenge, though.

very nice! well, i guess i'll see you in the fall!

  3. cool. see you in the fall. and be prepared to see stillers stuff on every inch of free space in the main office and on professors' doors. but don't worry, there are enough grad students that hate the steelers love, so you'll be fine.

one of the secretaries here has the largest steelers shrine on and around her desk i've ever seen. for april fools, me and two other students covered every steelers sign with either browns and bengals gear and pictures of chad ochocinco. it was pretty great.

LOL. I don't know if it's wise getting on the secretaries' bad side. But that is hilarious!

  4. Hi,

I have been waitlisted for the PhD at UNC for about 9 agonizing weeks now. I have offers to other programs, and in fact am being pressured to reply by April 10 by one of them. (Their exact words were: "we would very much appreciate hearing back from you by April 10 regarding our offer.") I would imagine that they ask this in order to go to their waitlist in time...

UNC is my first choice, and I do not want to be clogging up the process for someone waiting for a spot that I have been offered. I also am terrified that if I wait until after the 15th I will thereby loose those spots I have been offered due to my waiting out for UNC, and then nothing will materialize from UNC, and I will be stuck with nothing.

This whole waitlisting thing is awful, as I'm sure that some of those offered a spot at UNC are waiting on school X, and someone at school X is waiting on Y, and that one is waiting on school Z, etc... A horrible gridlock that will be an exploding mess on the 15th.

I know that UNC received around 430 applications, accepted 16, and waitlisted 6. Is anyone here part of the 16 and has already or will be turning down UNC?

Also, as it is clearly a related question, has anyone here accepted UNC?

I made the agonizing decision to turn down UNC today. Best of luck to you!

I am on the fence between UNC and Pittsburgh. I loved everything about UNC except its funding package. I have several years of funding at Pitt just for research and no teaching responsibilities. I'm also waitlisted at another school. So, there is hope for you. I'm aware of people on the waitlist and am trying to make my decision asap because of this. But it sure is hard when it's 7 years of your life, eh? What is your area of interested study at UNC?

  6. Well, now that we can do some turning down, who are you giving the axe to? And more importantly, who are you accepting???

I, after a good deal of solid notifications and offers, (a mixed bag really) am unsure of where to go, and who to turn down. Honestly, UNC has offered their accepted students a garbage package and after speaking to the DGS on Friday, apparently North Carolina has had one of the worst economic issues in the US, well, next to CA. Also, a close friend of mine is currently doing her PhD at UNC, and she told me some things about the the history department, and especially some new changes there, and ones rumored to come that honestly make me question the reputation that having a PhD from there in 6 years will be.

Anyways, just trying to get some insight on where other accepted applicants are going, and who they're turning down....

Out of curiosity, and if you don't mind sharing, what are these changes that will be happening at UNC?
