I have been accepted to international affairs masters programs in both American's SIS and Columbia's SIPA, without funding in either one. I understand that SIPA is ranked higher than SIS, but SIS still does rank #8 in the nation (based on the latest ratings I've seen). I would love to go to Columbia, but don't see what the point is in accumulating $140,000 in debt just to have the name to put on my resume. After all, I do plan to either work in the government (probably making around $50,000 a year starting off--the ave. salary of SIPA graduates), or possibly go on to get a PhD (but probably not at the same school I get my MA or MIA, and not necessarily immediately after graduating from the masters program). Will either of these programs put me in a better position for pursuing a PhD in another school if I choose that path? More importantly, what insights can anyone give me regarding my SIS-SIPA dilemma right now? I have to make my decision by early next week, and this has become a major source of stress for me! I appreciate any comments/advice. Thanks!
