  1. Dear All

I have got accepted into Fletcher MALD program with some scholarship. Fletcher was my first choice and I would be joining the program. I am a journalist with internationl experience and am considering to make a sort of career change. I am also open to jobs with UN and other international organisations though I know these jobs are highly competitive.

I would like to hear your views regarding career options after MA in IR or MALD in particular. When I was applying to this program I had a good idea which direction I would be heading to after graduation. However, a massive loan is giving me the jitters and am forced to think about working in private sector for a couple of years. I have no private sector/managerial experience and am not sure how much will this hurt me.

It would be really helpful if you could guide me what roles are offered to IR/MALD graduates in the private sector. What about Consulting..Is it doable.... I am also trying to get in touch with MALD graduates but its always great to have insight from others as well.

    Thanks a lot

  2. IMO, The admissions will never disclose the exact time when the decisions would be released. They would not want a situation whre 1600+ students are logging in at the same time because GMAS server is bound to collapse in such situations..

Congrats Neha, for your admits..All the best..

check the responses ! i did my part as well, but didnt realize she had already replied :)

  3. Last year they sent out rejects/waitlists/admits on friday. acceptances were sent out early morning and reject/waitlists were emailed by afternoon..This year its been really strange..I dont know whether its a good idea to keep applicants in limbo..To make matters worse, WWS dont have an admissions blog...BTW, I have lost hope as well...I cant imagine they are still making last minute decisions before informing the applicants...

Called the office today. The lady on the phone told me that all "decisions" haven't been sent out and will be sent out if not by the end of this week, hopefully by early next week. When I asked her if all the "Admits" have been sent out and whether the Waitlists and Rejects remain, she said she was not aware.

    I am losing hope! :-)

  4. But last year reject/waitlist emails were sent our 5-6 hours after the acceptance notifications..Today, we havent heard anything from WWS after initial wave of emails...

Why its taking so long, even if we are supposed to receive reject/waitlist emails from the graduate school?

WWS sends emails only accepted candidates and the Graduate schools sends all official emails(both accepted and rejected)

It looks to me like those of us who have not received emails from the WWS are screwed.

  5. Last year 85 were selected out of 891 applicants with 11 deferrals and 37 waitlisted..I wonder how many seats we are competing for this year..

Ha, that's fair enough. But I figured it wouldn't be right not to share the info I had. This waiting has to end. Hope the guy was right.

  6. Dear Friends

Congrats to all those who have got acceptence from their dream colleges..I hope good news will keep flowing..

Just a little query. how does a college measure language proficiency of the applicant. I mean we mention our level of proficiency basic / intermediate but what if the language was learned from a tutor and a university certificate is not available.

Do we have to submit a certificate after the admission along with our transcripts.

    thank you

Got admit from American University SPA. I feel good.

  7. Dear Friends

I have applied for Fletcher's MALD program and submitted my online application for Jan 15 deadline. However, my transcripts have not been received by the school because of the postal delays. I was asked to wait till Feb 1 but my transcripts haven't reached yet..

Yesterday, I spoke to the admissions assistant and offered to submit SCANNED COPIES of my transcripts because it was not possible for me to send fresh set of transcripts.I don't have an extra set of transcripts and am in Germany. It will take time to get in touch with the University in India and request for new transcripts. I also assured the School of submitting original transcripts, in case an admission offer is made.

I am a bit disappointed by the response of the school. The admissions assistant said she cannot assure me that my application would be considered, it depends on the discretion of the admission panel and there is a chance that they will not consider my application.

Now, I appreciate the application review policy of the school but I fail to understand as to why they can't even look at my application. Every other school asks prospective students to submit copies of transcripts and original transcripts are required only after the admission...Why Fletcher cannot make an exception for this unfortunate situation..Its not a case of forgery or deception. The remaining part of my application was completed two weeks back and since then my application is lying in a folder waiting for my transcripts to arrive!!!!

    I am really distressed..

  8. Thank CCH604 and Neha..

Thank you for your reaplies. I have just checked with the postal service and I am told that usually it takes 7-8 days for a post to reach the US from Germany. But some of my colleagues have also hinted that postal delivery may take nearly a month (unusual bot not impossible).. If I miss the January 15 deadline because my transcripts reach at a later date, I would definitely be considered for Feb 1 deadline but without financial aid consideration (please correct me if i am wrong.)

I must say Fletcher has been very supportive and has assured me that they are willing to wait for next few days..It wont be possible for me to send a fresh set of transcripts via DHL because am in Germany and dont have extra sets of transcripts anymore..I will have to go to India or ask somebody else to receive new trasncripts and the whole thing will drag on..

    Hi ,

I called Fletcher two days back! Because things like fee etc showed incomplete. However, they said by the end of next week , everything should be updated so i should call then. Their blog also says that as long as your online application is complete, they are OK with documents through post arriving by Feb 1st. So if there really is a problem and they still haven't received your transcripts at all you can probably send via something like dhl and they would receive it in 48 hrs or less.

I checked mine today after reading your post ! and everything is complete. so just relieved !

  9. Dear All

I have applied to the Fletcher School MALD program for Jan 15 deadline. I just received an email from the Admissions that my application is incomplete and that my official transcripts are missing. I had posted my transcripts a week and half back from Germany and was thinking that the post would reach the school in time.

I wonder if this mail was meant for me only or are they sending this message to everyone just to make sure that the applicants get to know the missing element of their application. I have gone through the Fletcher application online account and it shows that all the required material except for official transcripts has been received.

    Thank you all in advance.

  10. Hi Energizer

Have you applied to WWS MPP programme. As far as I understand, you need to have minimum 7 years experience before you apply to MPP programme..or is it that you're aiming for MPA..

    all the best..

Program Applied To (MPA, MPP, IR, etc.): MPP

Schools Applied To: GSPP, WWS, HKS

Undergraduate institution: IIT Delhi (one of the better engineering universities in India)

Undergraduate GPA: 9.1/10 (Summa Cum Laude)

    Major GPA: 9.6/10

    Undergraduate Major: Engineering Physics

    GRE Quantitative Score: 800

    GRE Verbal Score: 700

    GRE AW Score: 4.5

Years Out of Undergrad (if applicable): 2

    Years of Work Experience: ~2

Describe Relevant Work Experience: worked with the Planning Commission of India for almost an year, co-authored a couple of policy papers and a book chapter. Involved with the NATCOM document preparation or the Government of India.

Strength of SOP (be honest, describe the process, etc): Took over 6 weeks - got inputs from a former HKS professor. Highlights my background (rural) and commitment towards provision of energy services for the poor in developing countries.

Strength of LOR (be honest, describe the process, etc): Physics professor - should be solid; former HKS professor - super solid; a former Manager: should be solid

Questions: Hoe much of a handicap would the work experience thing be? I've undertaken courses in economics and policy (Calculus was aplenty - thanks to my Physics major). Would it make more sense to wait for an year even if I get offers?

  11. All the best for your policy essay.

I am from india but right now m working in Germany. As for your SOP, you may feel that your 'story' is not strong enough but others may find it compelling. be honest with what you write and try to weave your past experiences into future goals. easier said than done!!

they have asked about a policy issue that has impacted my life... but since none have ( atleast not significantly ) im going for the conversation or experience that changed my perspective .. i still find my SOP lacking in several departments!

and yes I am from india.. are you German ?

  12. Hello..

Are you from India..I am also applying this year but SIPA is not on my radar..have already submitted my application to princeton and Fletcher is due on 15th.. What exactly SIPA is looking for in the policy essay..Actually I haven't gone through the SIPA website and m not sure about the application requirements...my test scores have been killing me..didnt study a bit for the gre and got the result I deserved..plan to retake it..

    Hello ,

I am having nightmares ( truly) , with my SIPA essays, ive read the essays of someone who got through last year and they are so well written, I dont even know where to start especially for the policy essay .. i mean i am interested in international economic policy .. i am interested ins everal but none have impacted my life...

i am just so confused and nervous dunno where to start :(

  13. For the schools I applied, the minimum is 100 but with cut offs of 25 each section. I see that is not the case with you, but 100 is minimum. Why not retake it, and take that extra points you need?

I have submitted my application to WWS and Fletcher's application is due on jan 15, 2011. I have checked with the ets and i wont be able to retake my Toefl before Jan 15.

Retaking GRE is a different matter because I have already booked a date..

  14. Thank you all for your replies..

    my gre verbal score is 490..not 390...oh god..was I sleeping when i was writing this post..my bad....will it help me...GRE (1180, Q 690, V 490)..though i agree its still not good enough.

The schools I am appying to have set a minimum Toefl (100 for iBT) but there is no sectional cut offs..so ideally my application should be considered even if i scored 20 in the listening section but then its just 100..borderline case...

right now I am not worried about funding..i will try to shoot for 600 in the verbal section when i retake my gre...

  15. Hello

I am applying to Princeton WWS and Fletcher MALD and both colleges have set a minimum Toefl score, 100 for Toefl ibt. I scored 100 in my toefl ibt and I am surprised to see my test score because I got 24 in speaking section and 20 in listeing. was expecting more..in reading I have 28 and writing 27.

I wonder whether they will consider my application because its a borderline case. minimum toefl is 100 and I scored just that. doest it make a bad impression. I scored 1180 in GRE (Q : 690, V 390, AWA 3.5) and I am going to retake it..I am a journalist planning to switch over to public policy and AWA score has murdered me..

I am worried.. I have strong LORs, good work experience, good GPA and interesting story/bacground but now my test score seems to ensure that my application wont be considered..

    thanks a lot

  16. Hi all

I am applying to WWS and Fletcher for fall 2011 but I am really worried about my GRE score. I scored 1180 (Q: 690, V: 490). to make matters worse, my awa score is 3.5. my toefl score is 100, i got 27 in writing and 29 in reading..dont know how i got 20 in the listening section that brought the score down ..I didnt study much and now i am really upset about it..

I have an unsual profile and i think i would have been a strong candidate but my gre score is killing me. WWS deadline is over and am not sure whether they would accept a new score (IF i retake GRE)

I am a journalist planning to switch over to public policy. I would request you all to suggest what should i do..Am i worrying too much or princeton wws has gone out of my hand...

    thanks in advance...

  17. Hi,

The admission committee would be curious to know why you're moving towards public policy from IT industry. be prepared to explain this issue in detail.

    Hi :)

I do not have any workex to show in non-profits/ anything relevant .

Can mention only this : was chairperson of a community service club in college, received their award for best Member at National level(India), and organized free health care camps and stuff ( Not much, I know :(

1.I want to do policy studies and not development studies but focus on issues affecting South Asian countries.

    2. Another concern is funding

IDS - Univ of Sussex, SOAS - Univ. of London, Univ of Manchester , LSE , University college London will these places provide enough funding?

Or do US univs provide more funding?

Considering my zilch relevant work ex, let me know 1-2 safe univ in US I can apply with chances of funding :)

    Pls let me know..
