I will be applying to PhD programs this fall. I have encountered a small setback: sometimes when I email a professor at a program I am interested in, I get no reply. I send a formal, polite, inquisitive email with what you would expect: a little bit about me, my research interests, explaining why I am interested in the program and them in praticular, and asking if they are taking on new graduate students. About half of the professors I have emailed do just not bother to respond. Is anyone else experiencing this?

Hi everyone, I'm wondering if anyone here knows if any American graduate history programs have one or more professors who specialize in the history of leisure. More specifically I'm interested in the history of leisure as it pertains to the English aristocracy and the American upper class in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. I know this is very broad and general and has much room for more details, but I'm curious if anyone happens to know of a scholar/professor within a graduate history program who focuses on this area of history. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks!

And from the program's website: "Some students enter the program to fill gaps in their undergraduate training or strengthen their expertise so as to support the arduous research and disciplinary focus required for future pursuit of the Ph.D. degree. The program also appeals to recent college graduates with cross-departmental interests, who use the interdisciplinary approach to increase their knowledge in a number of areas prior to pursuing advanced study in one specific discipline."

In an email exchange with one of the directors of the program, I was informed that many students pursue the MA in American Studies with the intention of pursuing a Ph.D., and that many students go on to get a Ph.D. at Columbia and many other universities around the country.

Hi, I'm new to the site. I was wondering if anyone else has applied to the MA program in American Studies at Columbia. I have and have not yet heard anything back. Thanks!
