  1. One thing that I think I mishandled leading up to this cycle was my development of relationships with PoIs. I think my relationships with them were too cursory and shallow.

Can those who had success this cycle share some information about how they established relationships with PoIs? How did you reach out to them initially? How/how often did you interact with them?

I am pretty sure they go out at the same time, but waitlists and rejections are later. I  heard I was waitlisted by the department’s director of grad admissions on Feb. 3 when I applied.

Thanks. Is that for all schools or just UVA?

  3. Does anyone know if acceptances come at a different time depending on subject-matter? I was really excited about UVA and am disappointed to have heard nothing; but then again I'm Middle Eastern history so the timing of acceptances may be different (or so I hope).

  4. Thanks for sharing Thomasunra. You sound like you have great qualifications for a PhD and I wish you well.

I will probably also give next cycle a chance if this one doesn't work out. (I'm working in the Arab world in a decent paying job so I can just continue that for a year.)

  5. Congrats donuts! If you are comfortable doing so, go ahead and share more about yourself so we can have insights as to why you're doing so well.

I've applied to four schools (Colum, UVA, Harv, Yale). I am a non-traditional candidate (have a MAPSS degree concentrating on HIST, and a JD), looking to specialize in legal and intellectual history. I have fluent Arabic, had over a 3.9 in the master's, and a 3.7 undergrad (which wasn't in history). I am of Arab ancestry/cultural background, but it's "just" on the maternal line so no idea if that means anything for admissions purposes.
