I had made excellent use of this forum when I was applying to graduate schools last year, now I want to give back. I have chosen a research group at the University of Pittsburgh and I just wanted to say how close I was to choosing the WRONG GROUP! I feel as though there is not alot of information for incoming students when it come to choosing research groups. We should change that.
I started at a synthetic chemistry group at UPITT in the summer of 2019. The group was OK, but, I was not crazy about the projects being assigned to graduate students. So I began shopping around for a different group. One of the other groups was led by Dr. Peter Wipf. I knew he was one of the better known advisors as PITT, so I started speaking to his current group members and other students in the department. I am so glad I did!! Apparently he has a long history of harassing graduate students, post-docs, and staff members. He is even currently under investigation by the department for these allegations! Apparently many students who join don't even stay because it is sooo bad! I also see they don't publish any high-impact papers anymore! I wonder why! I have since joined another group and am loving it! Pitt is a great school if you are considering it! just avoid Peter Wipf!
Good luck to all of you!
