  1. Disclaimer: I don't know anything about music tech.

My two cents: Follow the money. It's not wise to take on inordinate debt for any kind of music program, music tech included. There are only a few kinds of professional degree in which high debt may not be a problem, such as law school or medical school, where you know you'll be making that $$$ right after you finish. Clearly, we're in a different situation. If you have a great financial deal at a great program—one that sounds better than the other two already—then this sounds like a no-brainer to me. I'm of course assuming that money is a consideration for you. If not, then know yourself out I guess, haha.

Is the DMA composition process different from the PhD one?

I applied to CUNY last year—a professor there told me that the DMA and PhD application processes and programs are virtually the same, so much so that they were considering nixing the DMA altogether and just having a PhD. So I would assume that admissions timelines for the two are also virtually the same.

hey, i haven't heard anything either! i saw the faculty accessed my links on feb 8 though, which is quite some time ago, so i'm not holding out too much hope lol

Understood, thanks for letting me know! Yeah I'm certainly not counting on it haha. We'll see.

  4. Well, here we are at the beginning of another week, waiting once more...

Has anyone heard from Wesleyan? That's basically the only school I'm still waiting to hear from that's relevant to my decision-making. Last year they let me know of my rejection on 3/11, but just curious if anyone's heard anything as of now. I know there was at least one other person here who applied there.

Sorry to hear you didn't get in, but congrats on trying for more programs this year! Hope you make it!

Question, were you able to follow up with Brown (or other schools) for feedback on your application?

Thank you! This time around I do have one great offer on the table and am waiting from several other schools. Definitely don't give up if you don't get in anywhere your first time around (I did not).

Unfortunately I can't really answer your question because I didn't try to get feedback. I was so burnt out from the process that I just wanted to get back to making music again. I did get feedback from some peers and former professors, though.

  6. Not to be a downer, but last year I applied to Brown and did not get my rejection until March 20...just thought you might want to know. Don't be too much on the edge of your seat, as it could be a while longer until decisions go out.

Y'all I'm about to kill UNC haha. Looks like acceptances and a rejection have gone out for musicology. My application page updated to say that they periodically send email updates yet...no email. It's driving me bonkers!

Have you checked your spam/trash folders? Sometimes important emails end up there for me...which also drives me bonkers. I've learned to check those daily.

oh hey, i also applied to wesleyan!! haven't heard anything from them yet either, but they've got that comparatively late deadline and all :)

Sweet! I applied to the school last year and they got back to me (with a rejection) in mid-March. So we got a ways to go. I have no idea what the timeline is for acceptances.

  9. Hello gang, composer checking in here. Applying to master's programs at: Yale, Stony Brook, Wesleyan, Montclair State, Tufts, and Brooklyn College. Have only heard back from Yale, a rejection. Looking forward to waiting with you all!

  10. Well, just got my rejection from Brown. That's 0-8 for my schools...it's been real, y'all!

Good luck to you all. Maybe I'll be back next year after I reevaluate. Considering applying to funded/cheap Master's program rather than trying again for doctorate. Peace ✌️

By the way @freshavocado, another MM to look at is Rice.  I’ve heard their masters students tend to be fully funded.  It’s also my only outstanding school...

Thanks! Though it's a bit far for me...trying to stay in the Northeast/Midwest for family.

Still haven't heard from: CUNY, UC San Diego, UC Irvine, UC Berkeley, University of Missouri Kansas City.

There's a non-zero chance that the delay has to do with the COVID-19 madness. Nearly all of those schools are in badly hit states.

Still waiting on Brown on my end. Good luck and stay healthy!

A generally trustworthy source--a very well-known composer in academia who has ties to Columbia. Granted, I've not looked into this myself, and the website would suggest that there are many current DMA students, so perhaps that's not a recent bit of news?

Eh, who knows. I have heard this very thing about NYU though, from someone who was rejected years ago because the school was not admitting any composers. Steinhardt admitted 1-2 doctoral students per year across all disciplines, which is why I didn't even apply. I'm confident, but I know I'm not that guy who's gonna be the one person to get in in 2-3 years.

Does anyone here get into any schools at all? Columbia this year only accepted one person... Told by Haas

Very strange. I know a different Columbia professor quite well, and they told me they took four...

Haven't gotten in anywhere yet either, still waiting on my last school—Brown

  15. 13 hours ago, Bucky Waters said:

...AAAAAND rejected at Brown. Womp, womp.

Really sorry to hear that. I've gotten seven rejections and Brown is my last active application. I haven't heard anything yet? Strange.

  16. Has anyone heard from Wesleyan? I applied to their Master's program and am getting a little antsy. Not a lot of data on their timeline from past results...I suppose it makes sense that the Master's would be a bit later than the doctorate programs.

Anybody know what's going on with CUNY's Composition PhD? I saw a note on the results page inquiring about the waitlist, but my partner hasn't heard either way--no acceptance, rejection, or waitlisted status.

I didn't receive an email, but I checked my application portal and saw that they posted decisions a little while ago. Unfortunately, I did not get in. Maybe check there? No idea about waitlist.

I applied to Brown and Stanford, and haven't heard anything.  Both usually do interviews (seemingly always in January for Stanford, and I believe Jan/Feb for Brown).  Brown reviewed my portfolio in December (they barely looked at anything I'd submitted :( ), and Stanford had a detailed look for several weeks over January but I haven't heard anything since. I'm thinking it's sadly not looking good for those of us who haven't been contacted for an interview ?.   I'm pretty sure that UCSD is interviewing this year, but they've done rolling reviews/acceptances in the past, so that could still be a possibility.

Sad!! I knew Brown was a long-shot...their program is heavy on electronic/multimedia, which is not really my focus. I would like to get there but didn't have much opportunity in undergrad.
