I want to second this (chem/environmental engineering field)! I have not yet been accepted anywhere, but many PIs that I did not think would even give me the time of day have virtually met with me because of my research experience. I don't have the best GPA (3.32) so I was worried about hearing back from anyone I contacted, but they have all mentioned that my experience in the field makes me a good candidate to consider. So, I would say emphasizing your research would be an important part of the apps!
