Lucky Ted

I'm currently applying to a PhD program. I'm being asked to write a statement of research where I'm supposed to describe a research problem and how I would go about studying it. I have no idea how to do this since I'm just a student and feel like I don't understand the field well enough. Has anyone dealt with this before? How did you handle it?
