hi all,
I've just received 5 years funding to study ancient history at the UCLA history department. While I am absolutely thrilled, I am quite curious about how UCLA history stands out among other programs. I am an international and does not really know about perceptions inside the U.S. regarding different history programs with ancient history emphasis. If somebody could share their insights I would be extremely grateful.

I just saw that you hadn't got a response yet, and thought I'd throw out my opinion: UCLA History and Classics are close to the top; maybe not as high up as some ivys and or stanford (someone else correct me if I'm wrong) but still highly ranked and very well regarded. Hope that helps somewhat. I'm guessing some others are better qualified than I to assess UCLA for you but I thought I'd start it off anyway. Congrats!

Who's the Austin admit? Congratulations! Guess that means I won't be getting an offer from them, but I guess I shouldn't complain as I already have some good options for the Fall. Anyone else apply and not get an acceptance from UT?

I am not hearty enough of spirit to keep this up!
This is by far the best thing I've ever seen. If only all grad school correspondence came in LOLSpeak.

What programs in specific at UBC and UCLA?
Just regular Classics, but I just noticed that you were accepted to the archaeology program there - congrats! That is incredibly awesome. I'm guessing that I am unofficially rejected from UCLA, since it seems like they would've had to have notified about interviews by now.

Hahaha. Seconded. What program does everyone most want to hear from and/or what potential acceptances could change your plans for the Fall? I'd like to hear from UCLA (if they haven't already sent out their invitations) and UT Austin.

Congrats to whoever got the USC acceptance! That's a terrific stipend.
I got the same offer (Provost Fellowship), but I am not the one who posted it in the results section. Who is the other admit? Any word from the department itself?

I got my first result in last night and it was a yes from UGA. Waiting for 7 more results...

ElCielo, I also haven't heard, but I suspect that if they've notified wait-lists, they've notified acceptances.
That's what I suspect as well, but its strange that none of the acceptance have shown up in results. Good luck!

Anyone know anything about the Stanford wait-list that showed up today? I'm wondering if they also notified acceptances and/or rejections, because I still haven't heard anything from them.

Yeah, it was FSU. I got a more official acceptance from them now too, so now I have a place to go no matter what. Very excited!

Out of curiosity, did anyone here apply to UBC (British Columbia) this year? I'm actually a Religious Studies guy, but at UBC Classics and Religion are part of the same department. I heard back from them on Jan12, and I've been wondering if they've contacted others yet, or if anyone else from this forum is thinking about going there.
I didn't apply there, so I'm not sure. Was it good news from them? If so, congratulations!

I applied to 12 programs and just got some good news from one of them (I was nominated for a university fellowship). Still waiting to hear on all the others though, and I'm guessing it will be at least a week or two. Where did everyone apply? Has anyone else heard anything yet?

This has been linked a few times in the classics forum but its really worth checking out if you haven't yet. The FAQ page gives info on what a successful writing sample/sop in classics should look like, and the Graduate Program Survey page has tons of info about programs including what they look for in applicants and the (rough) percentage of grad students they accept each year. Hi! Which terminal MA program are you in (if you don't mind mentioning it) and would you recommend it? Rather, I'll put it this way: is it among these three, to which I will be applying: Vanderbilt, Kansas University, and Tufts? Like you, I will be applying to about a billion programs this fall, but I don't have an MA yet-- so it'll be several PhD programs and a few MAs. I am seriously going to apply to about 20 schools-- perhaps more. I am determined to get full funding somewhere!!!
I am not at one of the programs you mentioned, but I did apply and get accepted to Tufts. I visited there and didn't like the faculty a whole lot, but there are some people who do like the school so you should ask around. Tufts also costs about 30k a year, and the package they offered me was only 25% tuition remission, so I declined for financial reasons as well. Have you considered applying to Boston College or Georgia? I know they both have funded MA programs as well. Good luck with the applications! I'll post my results as soon as they start coming in

Trying to make up for a less than stellar GPA caused by an unfortunate accident my second semester at college. But the resume is pretty sexy, so I'm hopeful, with a 1280-1340 AW 5...someone?

I had a very similar situation to yours. I took the GRE for the first time and scored 680V/680Q. When I went to retake it, I took a bunch of practice tests and scored from the mid six hundreds to the high sevens, seemingly randomly. My retake scores were 720V/760Q, and in retrospect I'm pretty sure all the lower practice scores were from private companies (Princeton) and the higher ones were from powerprep. I would guess that if your good scores are from the ETS software, you will score more like that on the actual GRE. Hope that helps!

I would guess yes, but I'm not sure. The one I was looking at taking was all three Oedipus plays in six weeks, so that seems like a fairly advanced class. If you are interested, I would check the catalogue and see who's teaching the classes next summer, and e-mail the Prof. and explain your situation. I'm sure they would be helpful. Not sure when the schedule will come out though.

Harvard extension school usually offers upper-level Greek and Latin courses during the summer (one of each). I don't think they call it intensive, but they usually cover a good chunk, meeting two or three times a week.

I'm afraid I don't know much about Classical Linguistics programs, but I am all for resurrecting this forum! Out of curiosity, what is your history background that professors are deeming insufficient? I am also applying to some history(ish) programs but have a mostly philological background. I have a feeling that few classics undergrads come out having much experience in linguistics prior to grad school; maybe you could talk about your personal study of linguistics outside of school in you SOP?

There are a bunch of classics programs that have an ancient history track: Stanford, Harvard, UPenn; Berkeley has the AHMA program, which is a history and archaeology program for the ancient Mediterranean; Rutgers has an interdisciplinary classics and ancient history program that is separate from the regular classics program. I'm sure there are more but that's a few I can think of off the top of my head. I would check the websites of classics departments and see if any say something about a distinct history track. Good luck with the search!

Your three options would be a post-bac, staying at your undergrad institution for another year or so, or applying for a terminal master's. Of those I'd say pos-bac is the worst - but talk to other people since they may think differently - since it would be as expensive as spending an extra year in undergrad, but you'd have to start all over with teachers etc. A terminal MA might be a good idea, as there are a few that offer funding and having an master's can make your application to PhDs a lot stronger. In addition, some of these MAs are specifically for people like you who need to catch up in a language before continuing to a PhD. But the best option of all might be to just spend another year in your BA, since the faculty there are already familiar with your work and should be able to write you detailed letters of recommendation. My opinions are far from definitive, but hopefully that can get you started. I'm currently in a terminal MA program (Classics) and will applying for PhDs this Fall (Classics/History). I'm already starting to put together my list of schools - its gonna be some huge number like 12-15 to ensure a good chance at being accepted somewhere. Anyone else applying/ picked out their programs yet? Just thought I'd check in and see who will be around this season...

While, we're on the topic of asking for info, does anyone know where UCLA is in their process? I was waitlisted before the campus visit and I'm wondering how many they accepted and when/if they are likely to notify waitlists about a final decision. Anyone else on the waitlist there or been accepted/rejected already?
