Any updates from anyone here? I'm kind of surprised that I heard "unofficial acceptance: 5 weeks ago and the status is the same on the application and haven't received anything in the mail.

Dang - That's quite a bit of time! I would get in touch with them. I received official email notification from SGS Graduate Admissions Application <sgs.apply@utoronto.ca> a week after unofficial email from department. It was a basic email that said to check https://apply.sgs.utoronto.ca where a decision document and funding document was posted.

Have you heard from LLE at all?

  2. I once applied for a new program at an Ontario college, was rejected, then found out a year later they actually didn't admit anyone because the start of the program was delayed a year. I emailed asking for my application fee back, and I got a refund even after all that time. I'm sure they will be reasonable and give you a refund if you email graduate admissions. If that fails, another avenue to pursue would be reaching out to your credit card company to reverse the charge. In Canada, I think there may be consumer protections against this.

Okay basically the title, but I have a fairly new and fairly unique area of study, and I've only been able to find ~3 professors in the US who are doing something even in the same ballpark. To clarify, it's digital sociology, but I want to study relationships and the internet. There are a TON of professors in the UK doing this that I would love to work with, but I don't know how I feel about getting my PhD abroad. Any tips for finding professors in the US with similar interests, or even marketing myself to a prof with only sort of shared interests?

Agree with CafeConGabi, and I have a similar issue with my proposed research in digital education. Find leads by checking references of UK prof's publications for US scholars, dig into the issues of journals those authors are published in for US authors, same goes for conferences, etc. I follow UK scholars on Twitter to see who they're following and tweeting.

What's your specific topic, if you don't mind me asking?

    Best to you!

Thank you! I’ve never thought of programs outside the U.S. But since I’m aiming for the online ones, I should really extend my options! I’ll take a look at the MET program from UBC.

Are you applying for the LDT program for 2021, too?

I looked into Stanford's LDT PhD and MIT's Lifelong Kindergarten, but I've applied to Language and Literacy programs at schools that excel at educational technology research, digital centres, labs, etc. I live in Canada, and though I'm from the U.S., I can't imagine going back for an extended period of time right now. Also, tuition for Canadian Education PhDs is less than $6000 a year and most programs are fully funded to $30k with additional funding opportunities.

Message me if you want to ask questions about MET.

    Hey @yayfortacos!
Thanks! I got accepted to the program in January and finally got actual acceptance letter and funding package from Brock on Tuesday. Trying to deal with all the student visa and covid junk now, which is stressful because my common-law partner can't come with me unless he gets a job offer. Regardless, I'm excited to attend and to live in the Niagara area. I grew up in Pennsylvania, but live in Florida now, so I'm torn on how I'll enjoy all the snow again. If my partner gets to come with me, he's a native Floridian and will be shocked by snow I'm sure haha

Congrats!!! I love it here - I'm originally from Texas. Good thing about living in Niagara is the benefits of being between Lake Erie and Lake Ontario: warmer winters, cooler summers, and we don't get too much snow. If you live below the Niagara Escarpment, there's another little micro climate. Best to you in figuring out the visa situation with your partner!

@sugals I'm curious about this program, as well, because I live in Ontario near Brock. All three campuses have a combined total enrolment of under 50,000, so it's a way to serve students in three different areas of Ontario. Best to both of you, and if you end up living in Niagara let me know and I can point you in the direction of things you might need around here! I'm also from the U.S. but have been living here a few years.
