I go to NU. Less expensive options for living are Rogers Park and neighborhoods farther south of Evanston like Andersonville or Ravenswood. That said, relying on the Metra, L, or city buses is not ideal. I would recommend living in Rogers Park and taking the NU Shuttle (it stops at the law school in Chicago, Loyola (Rogers Park), and several stops in Evanston. Another option is finding roommates to share living expenses in Evanston. In my opinion, walking to campus is preferred when you have to be on campus every day. Biking in the winter? I know students who have done it, but they didn't like it. Good luck!
