  1. There is a Discord group for EALC applicants this year https://discord.gg/EwAMbUDQ
  2. Yes, most successful PhD applicants have an MA but not all. Those that don't have an MA usually have degrees in EALC/History from the US, and/or a great writing sample that shows mastery of English as well as research languages (Chinese, Classical Chinese, Japanese, etc., depending on your field).
  3. No, not from those two. Both of those have historically admitted students without interviews by the way so don't worry too much about it (in fact that seems to be the norm at Harvard)
  4. Even better if your name was Huang Pigoo
  5. I think they would have gotten a kick from your name Pigoo when you applied to Asian Studies programs
  6. I didn't do an MA at Yale but from what I know very very few students get funding for the MA. If you have a BA and are fluent in Chinese, and have a very good writing sample in English, you should be aiming for funded PhD programs directly. If you have the money to do an MA, that's one thing, but if you have to take out loans, I would say skip it and apply broadly to PhD programs.
  7. I didn't apply to Princeton, but in my other interviews I was asked: 1) future plans 2) more details about my research proposal (ie, which methodologies I would use) 3) if there are any other faculty members I would like to work with 4) they told me about funding and how things would work if I were to be admitted
  8. Someone on the results page posted they were emailed an interview invite by USC on Jan 8th
  9. This thread is so quiet compared to the ones from a few years back. Has everyone shifted over to Discord or Slack or something?
  10. Are your two interviews going to be in person or via Zoom this year? Are you American or an international student?
  11. Harvard, Chicago, Stanford plus a few others. I haven't heard back about any interviews yet. Congratulations on getting two already!
  12. I was thinking perhaps people have moved over to Slack or Discord or something for the EALC applicants this year. Do Penn, Cambridge and Princeton have interviews for EALC?
  13. Is it me or is this forum pretty dead lately, especially when it comes to EALC? I looked at threads about East Asian Studies from prior years and they had hundreds of posts by this point in the application cycle
