  1. @cactusflower If the literary program has a lighter teaching load and more generous stipend, you will probably have more time to write than in the creative writing program. How many sections each semester will you be teaching in the cw program? How many students in each section? Will you be mainly teaching composition? If the stipend is tight, then will you also need to take on loans or get a second job? These are some things to consider. If you'd like to message me, I can share some more thoughts.
  2. @PlacingJane1994Thanks for letting me know. I was worried that there was something missing from my app or something. The waiting is tough!
  3. For people who applied to Rutgers, does your portal application status still say “application submitted” rather than “under review”?
  4. @cactusflower Many cw phd programs have heavy teaching loads (2/2 seems to be fairly common) and, on average, lower stipends than the top lit phd programs. I think if you get an offer from a lit or rhetoric program with a minimal teaching load and a more liveable stipend it would be better for your writing than, say, a cw program where you’ll be teaching two sections of comp most semesters and possibly having to work another job to make ends meet. It depends on your individual circumstances and which programs you’re considering, of course. If finances aren’t an issue, then this might not be an issue anyway. But I also think having an MFA combined with a PhD in another area might be more competitive when it comes to the job market if you want to be a professor.
  5. I saw that someone has received an interview invitation from Emory on the results board. Does anyone know if these invitations are sent all at once or if they are done in batches. ie. if I haven’t received one, is it an implied rejection?
